gaf - I see you dived 2 weeks ago, but how long since you were certified? Things have changed a good bit lately, and maybe a refresher is in line? I deal with SDI/TDI, and most agencies advocate dive computers now. Otherwise, you need to to be famililiar with the RDP, Navy Tables, etc. Good dive computers are really cheap, and are a good choice fast NDL calculations and especially for multi-day dives.

However, these are still just a substitute for knowing how to work the tables.

Dive Safe.

Most people I have talked to that dive recommend computers, but even with a computer, knowing how to use the tables (and bringing them) is a must..
What if your computer fails between the 1st and the 2nd dive? I dont wanna lose a dive just because my computer went out of batteries..

And as mentioned before.. Diving according to your buddys computer is a big no-no..

Cheers thanks for the info, i got certified two years ago, and have only done two dives since that, one of them 2 weeks ago, i was diving with a charter, and the guide had a computer, Iv read over my dive chart and iv picked it up again. I do have a watch annd pressure guage.

My OW course (PADI) mentioned computers (in both the lecture and individual study) but they were secondary to doing exercises planing on tables. A friend already had a computer for the course but still dove by tables for the training dives. We covered multiple dives and calculating surface intervals, but did not cover multi-level dive planning.

Looking back I might have liked more planning experience. Not so much planning bottom times, but more suggestions on other little things divers plan beyond basic safety checks and such.
