I ran into one guy on my last dive (and first non-resort boat dive) that instead of using a plastic bin provided by the dive center (or those that had their own) used a tough box with wheels that fit under the seat of the boat. It seems like a better way to move stuff around. Is this common and acceptable practice at most dive centers? The person who used the tough box has been diving with that center for several years.

No it's not common, and why not, if you have a box that fits in the area where gear is stowed go for it :D

Depends on the boat. I know one boat that has a no hard box on deck rule. Another boat I saw a regular show up with a milk crate that worked perfect and fit just right. As for a plastic bin provided by the boat, only seen that once.

Up here in the Great Lakes, I have used bins, and have been provided with them for use. Never in the South or Caribbean.

I use milk crates (real ones, poached from the loading dock of a college cafeteria some 20-plus years ago, not the flimsy junk available at Wally World), for all my dive-gear-hauling needs. They have built-in handles, stack beautifully, and slide right under boat benches. And they're pretty much indestructible.

I am frequently on boats where space is an all too valuable commodity, where rigid totes are verboten; so it's one of my well-worn boat bags and / or a dry bag, stowed wherever they'll fit . . .

Soft bags or milk crates on my boats. Everything else is in the way.

4-gallon Midwest milk crates or
6-gallon Western milk crates?
Somebody shows up with (12) six gallon crates and I would comp their seat.
They are damned hard to find in the midwest.
We have to use 4 gallon crates here.
If I knew how awesome those were when I lived in Arizona, I would have stolen more of them.
