I'll be going on my fist trip to the Channel Islands in May (aboard the Vision). Does anybody have a recommendation for a good dive book for the area?

There is a newsletter called California Dive News that is published by St. Brendan Corp that has nice articles related to California diving including the Channel Islands. I believe the publisher also has a few books on the subject. Do a Google search for their website.
Have fun on your trip. The Vision is a very nice boat.

Hi Rossi777,
What a wonderful trip you will have! Sensory overload will occur...so just enjoy it.:thumbs-up My favorite books for the habitats, creatures, and experiences of the Channel Islands are:
1) California Marine Life: A Guide to Common Marine Species. 1998. Author/photographer Marty Snyderman. His enhusiasm and appreciation bubble right up off the pages. Great photos, insightful descriptions of ecosystem relationships and interactions. Excellent chapters focus on unique habitats, such as the kelp forest, or rocky reefs, or sandy plains.
2) Coastal Fish Identification: California to Alaska. 1996. Author Paul Humann, photographers Howard Hall and Neil McDaniel. THE fish ID book for the area. A little expensive..I keep it at home for reference. Great photos, and the line drawings are useful for identification tips. Bonus descriptor for each fish: "Reaction to Divers:..."
3) Fishes of the Pacific Coast: Alaska to Peru, including the Gulf of California and the Galapagos Islands. 1988. Author Gar Goodson. Full color illustrations by Phillip Weisgerber. Smaller and less expensive...this one goes with me on boat trips...great descriptions of behaviors.

Happy reading :book2: and joyful diving,:jump013:

Thanks for the recommendations Claudette. I have Humann's book. I've used it for some diving in Northern California and, your right, he's the best.

Thanks Icy Ice. I'lll check it out.

I enjoy the Vision. We've booked the entire boat for a trip in August. :)
