The Florida Keys Safe dive Initiative's web site is up!!! The Initiative is a multi agancy organization that put politics aside and came together to adress dive safety after last years "mini" Lobster season resulted in 5 deaths in the Florida Keys. Many of the people and organizations involved in the initiative were involved in the recovery of the divers on the recent Spiegel Grove accident. I am proud to be associated with this group.

I Dive A.L.I.V.E., I hope all of you will do the same.

I am glad these cards are made with the "A" emphasizing the need to practice CESA.

Don't want to start a CESA thread here, but as long as people are diving solo for lobsters, they will not pay attention to their SPG. Can not change the mentality of people, so we need to focus on the basics to save their lives.

Looks good, since it appears to stress education, not regulation or legislation.

So far....

Where are they headed with this?

We have no intention on becoming the dive police, and we know that there is a percentage of people that cannot be saved from themselves. The best we can hope for is to help foster an attitude that safety is important and that it doesn't just happen.

In the 7 months since lobster season we have had 17 dive related deaths in the Keys. A percentage were medical in nature that just happened while scuba diving, but others were due to thinking a dive is routine whether it was Lobster diving in 15 ft of water or diving a wreck. If safety is not in the routine this attitude can be deadly.

We are planning a full media blitz about safety in South Florida this July. Using TV, radio and print. The Dive ALIVE card that is posted on the web is being printed on a plastic laminate. We intend to distribute 30,000 of them.

The big push will be the Lobster Diving Rodeo (see events thread) 2 days befor lobster season.

thats where we are going.

ps: fishrdvm I am pleased to see that you recognize the reality of lobster divers mentality.

I have to keep slapping my hands to keep myself away from this thread.

I'm with you SD... I've been to the Keys during Mini-season....

I just read more about the Dive ALIVE program in your excellent thread in Events:

Great job!

I can well imagine how a 2-day lobster mini-season, with all its fanfare, might cause one to forget about safety a bit.

That's being SO kind! Mini-season reminds me of New Years Eve or ST. Patrick's day where all of the people that are out SHOULDN'T be out! (we like to call that amateur night)

All I can say to you is "good luck!"

Good luck, as y'all certainly insure some sad stories every years with mini-season. Nice reminders on the card for any diver - with one possible exception: Return with 500 psi emergency reserve - unless needed, then use to escape! I wonder if panicked divers drown at times because they've had the return with 500 drilled so much that they forget that they CAN use the reserve? Next years cards..?

A couple of the hand signals were new to me? Back to school? Nah, I'll stick to the ones that we all know.
