So I am sitting here watching my 50" plasma (the love of my life) and I see one of the Discovery HS Theatre commercials. There is a quick scene of a diver wearing a full face mask, shorty, and NO FINS! Has anyone ever seen or heard of this? Is there some new type of diving out there that I don't know about? Any insight on this one would be appreciated.

I am hoping that maybe its that idiot who did the "Walking with the Lions" show. He tried to freedive with sharks during shark week and made a complete a@@ out of himself in front of the camera, almost as much as he did w/ the lions...no business under water. Ah, quality television :)

Somebody working in an aquarium?

Oops, sorry... I forgot to put them on again. My feet are webbed so it really doesn't matter.

May have been an aquarium as airsix noted, at the Flower Gardens exhibit at the state aquarium they don't wear fins.

I would say that during my commercial diving time I would use fins in about 1 out of 40 or 50 dives.
Most of my working dives were spend standing or walking on the bottom or crawling through pipes. Very little swimming.

In heavy dress the divers wear lead boots to make sure that they stay feet down and head up.

It is a very common practice to not use fins in certain aspects of commerical diving, due to the nature of the activity-which is to work, not play and swim like a fish.
Some divers use no fins, others cut considerable amont out of the body leaving a Zoomie appearing fin that allows a certain amount of propulsion, still others will use varrious forms and types of topside boots.

Remember the role and mission is to work not to play,

Cheers from California---where it all began,

SDM

Diving with fins would be much newer than diving without them. ;)

I met a very experienced diver who used only 1 fin due to a leg injury. He was able to keep up and out paced others in the group with just one fin.
