Hi folks, I'm taking the "Discover Scuba" introductory pool dive on Saturday at the LDS with some friends. Can anybody tell me what to expect? Thanks.

Welcome to the board.
We talk you through the basic equipment, how it's used and some basic skills you will need. Nothing extensive, takes maybe 30 minutes. We then take you to the shallow end of the pool, put gear on you and let you breath from it, first above water and then squating in the water. If you get spooked you can just stand up. Once your comfortable we take you on an underwater swim in the pool. All together about 1 1/2 hr. You will need to fill out a medical form. If you answer any questions yes you will need a doctor approval for the class...no biggie just a standard legal CYA thing but it will keep you out of the pool that day. Take a towel and have fun.

I did a discover scuba some years ago........ it is as reported below. After the pool sessions, I rented a DM to take me diving. And rented him again, and again the next day..... I was hooked. Be careful, this scuba thing is addictive.........:D

What kind of questions are on the medical release form? I had asthma as a child, but have not had any symptoms in 25+ years, will this keep me out of the pool?

Only if you answer yes, go see a doctor, and then he says that you are not allowed to dive (a highly doubtful situation). Just use common sense. There is actually a link to the questions from the dive shop I used to get my pool and class work done. Here is a link to their PDF.

BTW, as for your original post, I think you'll be hooked. I took my fiancee on a DS dive while in Cancun and we both fell in love with it. We went out to the barrier reef with 3 DMs and abour 10 other people (each DM had 4 DS students, as I recall) and had a blast!

Looks like Nogard beat me to the punch. If your doing a PADI discover scuba, you can print the form above and fill it out ahead of time..get in the pool quicker. :)

If it is indeed PADI, they're going to teach you the basics like reg recovery and I believe some other stuff, but then you are allowed some time to fool around at the bottom of the pool.

You can definitely expect to fall in love. Report back and let us know what happened...

That about sums it up. The only thing extra I tell the participant is to bring a bottle of water also. 2 reasons. 1. I know they are going to have dry mouth at the end of the session. 2. While we're sitting on the pool deck talking about how much fun that was and sipping our water together, it naturally leads into a discussion about taking classes.
