Hi I'm a newbie waiting to take my O/W classes next week. I have been reading alot of posts here and have noticed DIR an awful lot? What exactly is DIR and how does it pertain to a new diver like myself. It seems alot of people are very oppinionated about the subject. Is GUE like the in thing or is it something every diver who wants to be good/safe should consider. I would appreciate some input on this prolly really newbie question.

Thanx
Brian

You can learn a quite a bit by using the search function of Scuba Board... but it will take a while to wade through all the opinions.

I suggest a little internet trip to:
www.wkpp.org
www.gue.com

These sites should give you some background.

GUE does not provide OW water certifications at this time although Fifth Dimension Dive Center in Kent WA teaches their Basic OW S.S.I class to a DIR fundamentals level.

Living where you do this is not an option. Just get your Basic OW taken care of... dive a lot... glean what you can about DIR from this board and the websites listed... and have fun. If and when the opportunity to take a DIR fundamentals class presents itself you might want to consider it.

DIR = Doing It Right

It's a style of diving...a mindset, a whole lifestyle approach to diving. And diving safely, efficiently, and streamlined. It is mainly taught by GUE - Global Underwater Explorers.

To tell you the truth, taking a DIR class right after your OW class would probably be a bit much for you - from what I've heard, it's a very humbling experience for even experienced divers.

It is a very good approach to diving....the only downside to it, is that you will find there are some people that are quite fanatical about it and will accept no viewpoint except theirs. It kind of has ruined the DIR reputation in some people's eyes...but do look at it with open eyes as the training they offer is second to none.
