Sounds like 'ol George Irvine isn't DIR then ;)
The strokes of all strokes

Im sorry, I think you guys missed the whole WKPP thing altogether. Cause if you use THAT logic neither is JJ.

WTF?

I'm glad I didn't say that!! :)

Do you know how George is?
George is alive and well...he occasionally posts to the Gavin owners group, but other than that has kept a pretty low Internet profile lately.

This argument you guys are having is really, really bordering on full short bus status complete with lacrosse helmets and drool catchers. If George and JJ are the source of DIR, they are probably DIR. Make sense?

On the GUE thing.. You do NOT have to be GUE trained to be DIR since DIR was around before GUE officially started. The WKPP used to train people in DIR methodologies and such and still do, but Casey has posted recently that rather than an apprentice system and sponsorship by a more senior WKPP member, they have shifted to just requiring GUE Cave 1 and Cave 2 before joining the WKPP. Draw your own conclusions there..

OK, I'm just your average AOW diver who IS NOT "DIR".

I think there are two groups of people being included in the "DIR Wannabees" category. I also think that there is a polar difference between the two.
I think the difference between the two groups is the attitude taken toward the DIR philosophy.

I would describe the first group as true "wannabee" type individuals who want to be associated with a group in order to gain some type of recognition or vicarious benefit from the one sided association. These people are concerned how they appear to others and, more often than not, need to feel superior to their peers.

The second group I would describe as those individuals who, through emulation of methods that they feel as good and proper, take the methods and procedures developed by the GUE/DIR populus and incorporate them into their own diving practices. As the old saying goes, "Emulation is the most sincere form of flattery.". These individuals are not concerned about their percieved appearances, but are concerned about improving their diving skills.

If you are GUE/DIR trained or certified, even though some may incorporate your methods for all the wrong reasons, please be gratified in that you have raised the bar for others and they seek the challenge of meeting it.

Hey O , I know who george is. I was asking the other poster ,after he made the comment about GI not being DIR.

I didn't know WKPP was still going.I though the viz had been blown for years.( something about constuction up stream I think) Is it still a NSS project? or is another agency sponsoring it?

I'm no WKPP expert either, but here are a couple links that have some more information. I know the Florida Geological Survey has done some sponsoring of the work there, but I don't have any clue if the NSS is at all involved. Since most of the updates are posted on the GUE site, I am assuming they have some role too.

I was referring to the first 2 posts in this thread. If I'm not mistaken, both have signed up to take the December class out of Sacramento, Ca with Joe Talavera.

I have apologized to mweitz for jumping to conclusions based on the little title underneath our user names. I mistakenly thought, based on seeing some of your whacked-out titles, that it was written in there by him when in fact it was put there because of a box he checked.

I do believe we're on good terms, seeing that we are in fact taking the same course, having an online gripe carry forward to real life would be just silly. BTW, the course is in Monterey, at Manta Dive Center.

Anyways, this was really meant to spur the conversation of earning your stripes before you wear them. I certainly did not intend to start a 5-page thread, get myself almost suspended (you Gods, er, I mean Mods, really love your TOS and your "delete post button" a little too much), etc. This thread probably would have been better suited in the basic scuba forum. Live and learn, I guess.

Dive safe everyone,

Mel

There was just an article on the Tallahassee paper about the project: http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/tallahassee/news/local/9776871.htm

Of course there isn't anything in there implying actually diving, but I do know that they have been getting in the water a number of times in the past year.
