DIR and the canister light: newbie questions

With the advancements in led's and battery technologies I keep wondering why more people don't switch to canisterless lights. I mostly use a Scula Hydrolight with a soft Goodman glove. Once I put it on my left hand it stays in pretty secure and it is very unobtrusive. I do all sorts of drills while wearing it and it never gives me trouble.

I even rigged a dris shorty with a soft Goodman glove and it works like a charm.

what do you do with the light when manipulating the rear dump? looks like it would be a pain to slide it off your hand.

Honestly, it is not even noticeable. You just manipulate it as usual.

Lights are not about seeing, but about signaling. You're giving irradical signals when you are not able to switch the light to your other hand. Not good indeed.

A soft Goodman is very easy to take off and hold in your right hand as per your protocol. I, personally, do not take it off very often. Maybe that is a personal bad habit, but it should not be interpreted that the soft Goodman gets permanently welded to your hand all throughout the dive.

S-drill - YouTubeThis video answers both your questions. Watch the guy on the left. Only comment I have is the OOA light signal should be done from the elbow not the wrist. There is no right or wrong way to hold the light. As long as it feels comfortable to you, its the right way.

Clearest video yet. Thanks! As for "elbow not wrist"--now that's the kind of detail I'm looking for. As I said, I don't want to develop habits that will be frowned upon when I'm ready to go for the Fundies tech upgrade.

I think everyone agrees they will surely render canister lights obsolete in the near future. The reason I bought a used canister light as my first serious primary is that my Fundies instructor said, for the time being, we should all learn how to use one in case an appropriate canister-less light is not available. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe GUE still wants students to demonstrate use of a can light if they are to achieve a Fundies tech pass.

And they should. Even the bestest handheld lights only last for a few hours. I think the new gizmo halcyon just released only burns for 2.5hrs.

My hydrolight burns for 4 hours and if I needed more time, I could have gotten the optional canister for 4 more.
