I got my OW Certification last year, dove 15 times since then and am thinking of buying own equipment (at least a Regulator and BCD). After looking around I am leaning towards ScubaPro MK17/G250V with R295 for an octopus. Considering that I live in NY, but plan to travel to places where DIN tanks are popular what would be the better way of having a universal setup - buying a DIN first stage with DIN to Yoke adapter, or buying a Yoke first stage with Yoke to DIN adapter.

Thanks.

A din first stage and din to yoke adaptor is more universal as most yoke to din adaptors are limited to 200 bar din fittings.

Do you plan to buy your own tanks?

Do you plan to go the Caribbean or Asia?

Can you rent DIN tanks locally?

All the rental DIN tanks I have used UK, Egypt, Spain and Italy were combination DIN/K valve, so they had threaded inserts for yokes..........

I didn't like the DIN with yoke adapter setup myself, it sticks out to far on an AL 80 tank.........it would hit my head.........

You can get HP yokes now (up to 3500 psi), so unless you buy your own DIN tanks I would go yoke..........

In a prior post, someone suggested that you buy the DIN conversion kit for your reg and simple configure the reg for the location you are diving..........

My local cold water regs are DIN my travel reg is yoke...........

Hope this helps.......M

That's the best solution I think, on my Apeks it takes less than five minutes.

if you buy the special socket/extension and torque wrench its simple to change between the two options like mentioned above.

However you mentioned having yoke regs and using a DIN converter, no such item exists to my knowledge for use underwater. The make a yoke to din for fill stations though so that may be what you were talking about.

I dont like yoke, that knob is a perfect place to snag stuff and the DIN regs use a captured O-ring with gives me piece of mind.

If you plan to buy tanks then going DIN is the way to go IMO, if your friend/family member has the same reg system then going DIN is a good way to distinguish your regs from theirs. If you plan to get into cave, wreck, or other technical diving then DIN is the trend.

so I vote DIN

Ditto from above. A yoke reg with factory DIN kit is what I use, usually DIN but easy enough to convert back to yoke that way (for extended vacations away, for example, where rental yoke AL80's reign).

If you don't have your regulator's factory DIN conversion kit, then there's no way to use a yoke reg with a DIN tank unless the tank valve itself has a yoke-convertible insert - but don't count on being able to take any insert and have it fit any DIN valve (a dive buddy of mine got bit by that assumption).

However, a yoke adaptor for a DIN reg will pretty much fit any first stage, only caveat being the extra length as the prior poster mentioned.

Especially if you're ever thinking you might get your own tanks, though, go DIN.
