Can someone please help? I was all set to get an Oly 4040 and I find out it is no longer made, and has been replaced by the c-4000 . So does anyone know if the housing for the c-4040 will work for the new model? Thanks for any input.

You can still find C-4040 cameras if you prefer it. Do some research into the C-4000 first before you decide.

Still show the C4040 ???

and they show all the other new cameras as well ....C4000 C5050 etc.... Did they bring the 4040 back to life???

Jeez Ive been researching a digital camera purchase for the last 30 days or so and have found the 4040 readily available almost everywhere. And oly still shows it on their website

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_digital_cseries.asp

you will note they are both listed and when you compare the two the MSRL differs by 200 US Dinero. when you compare the cameras you will see a significant difference too.
Go for the 4040 and the pt010 Ikelite housing ( the light and motion one is really cool but mucho dinero more) :)

As far as I know, the C-4040 is just discontinued from further production. They're still 'on the market' and still an excellent choice. Just because no more will be made doesn't make them a bad choice. I expect them to have years of life in them and I wouldn't hesitate to buy one.

I would suspect they are still on Olympus' website because people still want information about them.

Thanks Dee, for your input. But i'm just wandering why would I want to spend $200 more for a camera that is not made anymore? As I have found so far I can get the c-4000 for $500 but the c-4040 is running at $699.

That's why I said to research the C-4000 closely. Compare it feature to feature to the 4040. I'd have to dig around and find it but there are some features of the 4000 that didn't lend themselves well to U/W use. One was the lens isn't as bright at 2.8. The 4040 has a 1.8 lens which means it utilizes ambient light much better. Sorry my memory is so fuzzy but not being that interested in the camera, the info didn't stick!

Here's one place to start...Steve's Digicam reviews

This is just my opinion ..... but the lens alone is a big benefit.....the 1.8 that is......no doubt a more expensive lens hence a cost difference......this lens requires very little light to capture great images.....

Another thing is I dont think (not 100% sure) the 4000 has the manual control like the 3040, 4040 etc..... I think the 4000 is more an automatic camera.....not that you cant get great pics with it ...... but me personally.....I really want manual control underwater to force the camera to do the things you want it to.......If that is the case the extra $200 would be a wise investment......(well depending on how far you want to go with U/W Photography:wink: ) Go to the olympus site and do a side by side comparison of the 4000 and the 4040 .... Shutter speeds and aperture controls look like they are only automatic for the 4000.......in addition to exposure compensation....vs auto or manual for the 4040

Truly I think the 5050 is more the replacement camera (of the 4040) ... yes it does have upgraded features and increased megapixels..... but maintains the features of the 4040....this is similar to when the 3040 was replaced by the 4040

I think you're right, Finesse. The 4000 has several exposure modes...portrait, night, outside, etc. that seems to take away alot of the control. Actually reminds me of some of the features of my Nikon CP880. On land that might be fine but I didn't see an automatic underwater setting! :eek:ut:

One thing the 5050 has that I don't like at all for u/w shooting is when you are in the super macro mode (one of their biggest selling points) it disables the internal flash which means it won't trigger the S&S YS90DX slave flash. You'll be forced to use a hotwired flash...and hense a more expensive housing than the Oly PT-15
