Can anyone tell me the difference between the two tests? I have a teen who has passed the first but is stressing over the second. He's a strong diver and is confident in his teaching skills but he tends toward test anxiety so he's worried he'll flunk the theory section of the IE. Is the theory section of the IE more rigorous that the theory on the IDC? Thanks in advance for any responses.

The written portion of the IE is verrrrry similar to the old DM exam when there were several sections consisting of 20 questions. In fact, it's almost identical to that. The new DM exam is pretty much the same without the distinction of multiple sections. If he passed the DM he should be able to pass IE. He can fail one section and get a retake. If he fails more than one section then it's game over (for that particular IE). If he is worried about dive theory, PADI has an e-Learning specifically for dive theory that should tune him up.

Thanks Toddthecat. Update-he passed the full IE with flying colors. Now all he has to do is find a dive shop in Maine willing to take on an 18 year old part time apprentice instructor!

I must agree... I found the IE portion to be easier then the IDC ones. I am glad he studied and passed!

Tell him congratulations! Hopefully he finds a good shop that'll work with him. If not, he might be able to find an independent instructor that could use a little help. Just keep an eye out and try asking in the regional forums too.
