Can someone please direct me to the post about over night stay in Atlanta on the way to Bonaire. Hubby is going this trip, not me, but, want to make sure its easy for him. He has an injured right shoulder.( I will not be there to carry the bag or the carry on ugh) I think i saw a post where you should take a cab and go to international terminal directly instead of the domestic terminal?............ Thanks for the help, I just cannt remember the best way to do this.
Why would taking a cab to the international terminal be easier than checking in Domestic and taking the plane train?
arrive friday atl, leave saturday for bonaire
Thanks for any help, I know this is an old topic, but again, I really didnt pay much attention.:dork2:

When we have to do overnight trip we always stay at a place with free shuttles. Almost always cheaper than a taxi. Usually we decide what we have to have in a hotel and then go to priceline and if their express deal works get it but otherwise will book direct with hotel. Big question is why are you not going????? And on a side note love ur screen name....especially since my better half is deedee...lol. Bill and DeeDee

Ask for assistance at the airport/hotel/cab. Tip well.

I frequently spend overnight near Atlanta Airport on my way to Caribbean dive destinations. I usually stay at Hampton's Inn or La Quinta, which are among others within 10 minutes of the airport. Bioth those have free shuttle services ( although a $5 tip is very well appreciated) and are close to a restaurant (Wendy's, I think). But within the terminal there is some travelling and AFAIK they do not allow luggage trollies inside the train.

Thanks Wild Bill,
Well first, i am not going because i have to do the dirty four letter word "WORK"... hahahha, but I am okay with that.
my hubby's name is Billy,, hahahahhahh
The hotel does have a shuttle, but i vaguely remember someone saying its better to take a cab to international terminal and check in there.
Thanks for the help.
cold here in virginia beach!!!

If the hotel shuttle service insists they cannot take your husband to the International terminal, then it would indeed be less hassle to take a cab from the hotel directly to the International terminal ("F"). Otherwise, if the shuttle were to drop him off at the Domestic terminal, he would have to take yet another (infuriatingly slow) shuttle that runs between the Domestic and International terminals.

All nonstop flights departing from Atlanta for international destinations (that is, with no intervening domestic connection) depart from the International terminal. Passengers on these flights are not permitted to check in at the Domestic terminal (hence the free shuttle between Domestic and International). Rather, they must check in by entering the International terminal directly from the outside.

You might logically think that because there is an underground train that ferries passengers among various gates along the entire route (over a mile) between the Domestic and International terminals that they would simply let you arrive at the airport at either end--Domestic or International--and then board the train and take it all the way to the opposite end, but that is not the case.

The system especially sucks for us Atlantans. The MARTA light rail system ("subway" or whatever) that I can take from where I live to the airport serves only Domestic and not International. So when I leave for Bonaire via the MARTA, I arrive at Domestic and then immediately walk outside and take the shuttle to International. Ditto on the return trip. On the return, when I land at International and exit Immigration/Customs, I am not permitted to board the train that could very easily take me to Domestic where I could catch the MARTA. Rather, since I don't have an onward boarding pass, they wouldn't let me through. So I need to go outside the International terminal and take the infuriatingly slow shuttle bus back to the Domestic terminal.

I hope this clears it up for y'all! ;)

We only fly through Atlanta one time to and from Bonaire. We avoid that airport now.

We did enjoy the return trip, by picking a longer layover, renting a car, getting a hotel elsewhwere and visiting the Atlanta Aquarium. Made up for all of the hassle, but as I said, we have tried to find other alternatives since then.

Yep...I'm agreement with gypsyjim on this one...over nighted through Atlanta twice...a major hassle getting my scuba gear....single tank and sidemount rigs plus my wife's signal tank rig and 4 reg sets all the way through that airport, onto a shuttle bus, into the hotel and the the reverse back to the airport the next morning....makes it seem like forever getting to Bon...now I take my chances with Insel out of Charlotte and hope they are running more or less on time....

Now that United has a Saturday morning direct flight from Newark to Bonaire we stopped doing Delta thru Atlanta as well. We had the pleasure of finding out about the new International terminal dance just a week after it opened. We did that a couple of years and never did find a hotel shuttle that would take us to the International terminal so we paid the cab fare. Apparently there are some hotel shuttles that will take you to the international terminal. Best to check in advance if your husbands will do it! And allocate plenty of time. Depending on the location of the hotel it can be a long ride...
