..oh, and if your friend did not want to buddy breath, he should have just ascended and followed the group at a shallower depth (so remaining air lasted longer) or surfaced ..... DM could have suggested he share air, but your friend had the choice whether to accept or not....

I can see where this is headed. Most threads that end up bashing DM's end up this way.

RockPile:
I respect the DM designation

I think I was pretty clear on my respect for the position.

catherine96821:
respect the Divemaster to the extent what you observe warrants that.

Expressed better yet. That encapsulates my point very nicely.

Thank,
JB

PSI is irrelevant since his octo is designed for emergency. Extending a person's dive does not qualify. I agree with the second part of your post.

If his psi's were 100/200 I would view that as an emergency and appropriate, which is why I asked. If he had 500/600 then go to a SS and end the dive. In that case I agree with you.

JRScuba:
I have rarely been on a boat were the divers read the waiver, agreement, etc.

I like to strikethrough a couple of the trivialities in the legalese just to feel like I'm bartering something.

No, I like dive masters very much and think we place an impossible burden on them by expecting them to solve everything. Some of us, think that we improve the overall situation by taking responsibilty for ourselves.

And if he had 100/200 it would be considered an emergency and the dive still ends:huh:

agree, that something needs to be underway before that point.

I also like them. On our recent trip to Anthonys Key on Roatan we had two fantastic DM's. It was mostly follow him around, if you wanted, if not, then do your own thing. We had a couple of hoovers on the trip and I was allowed to escort them back to the boat and then continue diving on my own.

But this will, as usual, turn into a "bash the DM" thread. It always does and it's usually from divers who have no idea what it takes to become a DM. Or divers who aren't capable of becoming one.
