Since the faceplates are all swappable between atomic regs and could be changed, is there a way to determine what the model / year is based on the serial number?

Yes, if you contact Atomic. That said, IIRC around 2005 the second stage case changed. Where the AFC comes in is "smaller." Hard to describe but easy to see.
