I'm heading to FIji in a few weeks - the majority of my vacation will be spent on Kadavu, but I'm trying to figure out what to do before I head there. I arrive early on a Saturday morning, and head to Kadavu Tuesday. Any suggestions on areas to visit that wouldn't be too far? I appreciate natural beauty, culture, low price tag and a lack of over-tourism. Thoughts?

if you into flowers and macro shots go to Sleeping Giant orchard garden that was owned by the fat guy in that old tv cop show - Ironside i think.

but - dont do it as a tour and pay $80 or $100pp. get your hotel to phone a taxi, get an AGREEMENT on how much it will cost you to take you out there and back and pay the enterance when you get there. by memory we paid $20 each way to be taken to the garden and as there was 2 of us it was quite a saving over the tour plus we got to do it in our own pace and without a crowd. I also went to the supermarket in nadi main street the day before, bought some picnic supplies and we had a really nice day at the garden relaxing before we left Fiji.

If you can - ask reception to phone "Jimmy from McDonald" as he was the best taxi driver we had when there.

cheers

If you have a few spare days on Viti Levu then I would recommend the shark feeding dives off Pacific Harbour. You may think this is a bit of a diving overload but it would be such a shame to be tramping around Nadi for a few days when you could be watching massive fish and some seriously meaty sharks being handfed - it is awesome - in fact it was recently voted the joint best shark dive in the world by a PADI magazine poll.

I appreciate nature topside too but given the choice between on the one hand, big sharks and enormous apex predators of the reef, and on the other, some pretty flowers, I know which I would prefer.

Here is a dive report from Shark Reef, Viti Levu: http://www.divetheworldfiji.com/viti-levu-scuba-diving-sites-shark-reef.htm

Go to Lautoka to see a real Fijian town, go to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and do it with a local taxi driver (just flag one down who has a cool looking car!), go to Natadola beach if you surf or like horses, Sigatoka sand dunes national park if you like sand boarding, Kula Eco park if you like wierd animals. Martintar in the evenings has Ed's bar for beers with locals and The After Dark for island tunes in the early hours.
