How much was Destin/Ft. Walton damaged from the hurricanes last year and what kind of shape is it in now? Not so much from a diving perspective but from a tourist perspective. Does it look like a war zone still? Are buildings still messed up/ restaurants closed/etc?

Thanks

Ivan put a hurt'n on both, but since then, they've almost completely recovered from a tourist perspective.

Shore diving is a bit different. *shrugs*

In Destin, we were there in October(2005) and most of the damage was just to the beach and most of the stairways down to the beach. There were several groups of condo units in the Crystal beach area that had all the sand washed out under them and a small collapse of their parking lot. But it didn't seem to have any unit damage, but I'm sure it stressed the integrity of the units (on stilts/pilings).

They public beach access at Pompano Joes (restaurant) was damaged the year before in Ivan and was completely rebuilt, only to be destroyed again by the new hurricanes and was closed. However, they were already sorta working on rebuiling the sand protection around it.

The beach at the Whale Tale (at Seacape) was eroded away pretty good also, but the Whale Tale was still standings. However, some of the condos to the west of it had waves crashing under the stilts/pilings.

Also lots of sand movement in the dive location of the East Pass jetties. See some of SeaYoda's threads on here for pic's he's taken and posted.

With all that said, I'd say that though there was some sand piled in parking lots, that in Destin almost 100% of the businesses were open and 99% of the condo's were open in October. The major thing that condo "renters" had problems with that the stairs beach access was still out in several places, or reduced to one access per set of units..
