Looking for info about diving in or near Destin. I plan on doing some H & L as well as spearing the weekend of the 23rd. Thanks for any information.

Try the Destin Jetties (East Pass). It's a good shore dive, or you can go with the local diver operators and they will take you there. The benefit to going with the dive operators is that you don't have to tote equipment across the beach (it's a good hike) or get sand in your gear. I went snorkeling there recently with someone that wasn't certified. Water depth gets up to 55 feet I hear.

I dove east jetty last Friday and Saturday. Friday there was 30ft viz at high tide, water was clear. Saturday was around 20ft, water was cloudy . I think the mud from the Mississippi is migrating east. It is illegal to spearfish at this site.

Hmmm... I thought I looked at the dates... weird. (Must've fried a brain cell or two prior to posting).... I was at the Jetty for Memorial day wekend '11.
Unfortunately, I couldn't dive the Jetty - I was with a family member that's young and isn't certified so I had to settle for "bubble watching". I think the trick is to get there early before the tourist boats get there. We were snorkeling among some decent schools of fish. I would say the viz was an easy 20 ft or maybe more at first. Then the tourists and crowds got there and mucked it all up and scared all the fish away... i'd love to dive it - looks cool. ;-)
