I agree with TSandM on either UTD Essentials or GUE Fundamentals. For recreational profiles, this is more applicable. They both discuss gas requirements, gas planning, ascent strategies, and MDL tables.

The Ratio Deco or Deco on Fly course is very interesting, but it wasn't until I started doing staged decompression dives did this information become relevant and meaningful.

Thank you all for the advice i really appreciate it, im looking in to taking the GUE fundamentals in June in Key West which looks to be a 4 day course, i will also take the course on the UTD site, again thanks for all your help with this.

I have many dives in the 100ft range and yes i did do deco stops in intervals at different depths before the 15ft safety stop but it was my instructor who planned them, i would like to know the reasons why and how to do them myself,
Why not ask your instructor? I would have thought this would be explained as part of whatever class you took where you did these particular dives.

I have asked my instructor and each time(2 times) i got a very basic answer as to why and what the reason for it was and was told since we are not going beyond or NDL that these stops were just for added safety, for this reason and some others i no longer use this instructor and im looking for a GUE instructor in my area to teach me the Fundamentals course and more, i was certified in 1984 at the age of 14 and then after only a few dives here and there at that age i quit till i turned 20 and started to dive more often and was careless in my approach, i dove alot of dives that were not safe and down to 100fsw with other divers who's approach were equally as bad, now at my age i have returned to diving which i love and through a friend found an instructor to complete my Advanced Open Water, as it turns out as an instructor this person seriously lacks the "educational" communication part of teaching, I cannot move forward in my diving approach until i find a new instructor whom i can ask lots of questions and get a real understanding of the science so to speak of certain elements such as gas consumption, deco stops, etc, etc. I have only 1 dive left with this instructor and that is a navigation dive, i have a list of questions and then im done with this instructor and will be looking for a GUE instructor near me, thanks.

If you would please report on both courses. GUE-F has often been reported on, although not much lately, and things do change. And I have not heard a report about the RD course.

Being in Florida gives you a lot of Fundies options, although some might require a bit of driving.

I think you will find the class will be one where there will always be a GOOD answer for your questions. That's what convinced me.

Sounds reasonable - if you are looking for some background on "why deep stops", then you might have a look at Eric Baker's paper on the subject. It's very readable and covers the basic theory pretty well. Of course a good instructor will always tease out a bit more info for you as well, but at least this will get you started.
