I've seen mention here that a lot of people are uncomfortable being in "deep water." even just snorkeling or swimming on the surface with no scuba.

What do you consider deep?

Personally, there are only two categories for me. Either I can walk on the bottom or over my head. Once it's over my head, I don't really see that it matters how much.

I'm slowly getting over the fear of deep water. Just the way it can seem like a bottomless pit scares me. if I can see teh bottom at all, I feel much better. Even if it was some how... 500 feet deep XD if there was some possible way I could see the bottom, I would be just fine. but I'm slowly talking myself ito that, with or without scuba gear, all I'm doing is floating and it's not going to just suck me in.

If i cant stand up its deep.

Not being able to see the bottom isnt an issue for me, with typical 2-3m visibility chances are if i cant see the bottom i cant stand up.

Required decompression stops . . .

Past 60 ft is deep for me, well, I never get to past 60 ft because I only have 7 mm wetsuit, that is not warm enough for Canandaigue Lake. Once you past 30 ft, you will feel big difference (thermoline)! Like 10 or 15 degree dropped. Way too cold for me so I have to go back up. Next summer, I will buy a drysuit and get AOW certification - so I will be comfortable going deeper. :icosm09:

That's temperature, not depth.
Some times I wish I were wearing a dry suit here in Georgia when I get down to 70' in Lake Lanier and the temp drops to 50F.

I guess I use PADI's standards for deep diving..anything below 60 foot. Deep is a pretty broad term.

I agree with most that I dare not go post 60 feet for now... later on... when I am more comfortable... but that should change soon... :)
