Hi! Does anyone have any experience with the Deep Sea Supply single tank rig? Pros and cons? Looks pretty good on their web page. Thanks,

Poog

I don't have the harness ... but I do have a DSS backplate, and it's high-quality. In fact, just about every time I show it to a friend they get backplate envy ... ;)

FWIW - I also own FredT, Dive Rite, and Koplin backplates. Of them all, the DSS has the flattest curvature and shallowest channel ... meaning that for a singles application it will hold your cylinder real close to your body. I like that ...

I have the full single tank rig from DSS. I have the 8 lb plates on my BP too. I love it! I went from a Jacket style to the BP/W and it fits so snug and pretty sleek in the water. I tried it in the water during one of their demo days and I was sold. The harness is really cool because of the piece in there that forces a curve in the shoulder straps and I personally like the quick release buckles, makes it easy to roll out of my BC when I'm at the surface trying to get my rig off so I can climb in our research boats. It seems pretty rugged compared to other gear I've seen and it works great. I like the short inflator hose he puts on the wing and the D rings are set at an angle so they're always accessible for attaching stuff. I also like the way his harness can cross in the back. I've been using it crossed and uncrossed, i'm still not sure which way I like it more. I've had the BC for just about a month and a half I think now and I have no complaints.

I just looked at their site. I noticed that they also have a hybrid plastic/SS backplate. As I dive a large SS tank with a 5mm wetsuit I think that it might be more suitable for me. Does anyone have any comments on it?

I believe Pete (NetDoc) has one of those ... he might not see this post, so you may want to PM him and ask him how he likes it ...

Thanks - I'll do that!! :D

I have the DSS (5lbs) BP and the harness.

The finish of the BP is nice and smooth, and the attention to detail is amazing. The pictures on the DSS website don't do it justice. I used to dive with DiveRite's Transplate harness, but I did not like it too much (actually, I hate it). After making a few personal modications to the DSS harness, it's perfect.

I don't have a DSS Single Rig, but have a few comments about the company and the product. Several weeks ago, I contacted Tobin George (owner) with questions about several things. In addition to answering all of my questions, he truly went the "extra mile". He suggested that for me to get the best feel for any single item, I needed to see and try the system as a whole - made sense. He then offered to send me one to demo... FREE. Thinking that was incredible enough, I told him that I would need it as soon as possible and asked if I could pay for overnight shipping... he declined and picked up the tab. I can only say wow about the service.

As for the product, it is amazing. Well though out, well designed and build wonderfully. Their specialized hardware is excellent and the backplate construction is innovative and second to none. To my dismay, circumstances prohibited my actual diving of the unit so I cannot comment on any characteristics of the rig in the water, but I believe it is will follow the rest of my first impressions. I have since sent back the demo unit, but hope to purchase one soon.

An additional note, if you have any questions/suggestions you should contact Tobin directly (he's on this board as coolhardware_52). He will do an excellent job answering your questions, and when I mentioned a few ideas (as hair brained as they might have been) he was very patient and interested.

They've got my recommendation...

I have the Deep Sea Supply kydex backplate and their harness for my Expedition Inspiration. It is beautifully made, and OUTSTANDINGLY comfortable and light. Tobin is really informative, very pleasant to talk to. You cannot go wrong with one of these rigs. ;)
