Used V-Planner on my deco course and used that exclusively for a few years (+2 conservatism) After getting a Shearwater I now use 30/85 gradient factors sanity checked against V-Planner.

Never had even a suspicion of a problem after doing deco on high O2 mixes so I'm happy with those settings. Have done a couple of deepish air dive with air deco that left me feeling really beat afterwards. Might be a lesson in there!

I've been using iDeco (Buhlmann ZHL16/C ~ GF30/80) and haven't had any issues whatsoever. It works well with my Shearwater computers. Aside from that, I've only used tables. I should state that I am a ways away from the magical number of 100 though.

+1 for the book "Deco for Divers". Great book, which you will read multiple times.

Unlike TS&M, I'm farm animal stupid at 1ATM, and actually gain intelligence as I approach 45 meters. :D

Do kludges=gradient factors?

Gradient factors sound so much more reassuring than kludges!

I would imagine kludges are like taking a decompression schedule and shifting times around to, for example, make a buhlmann solution look more like a bubble solution.

That's right, Blackwood. As I recall, we ran DP profiles, extended the 70 foot stop, added deeper stops, and then "shaped" the intermediate deco. (It was a long time ago, and outside of class, I haven't done it again, and don't own DP.) I always wondered why an organization promoted and sold decompression software that didn't produce a decompression profile they were happy with . . .

Dive a 1.0 P02 ish nitrox on an air computer for anything under 200' usually an EDGE or Skinny Dipper..inserted deep stop@3/4 depth and 1 at 60' OCD about ascent rates....thousands of dives, several hundred a year.Mostly 120'-160' BT 15ish total time 25-30min.3-5 a day from 4 to 30days straight.1 skin DCS rash.

For deeper than that trimix with VPM-A with 0 conservatism.50% and 02 deco gasses.Only a hundred or so of those.Always with inserted deep stops and OCD about ascent rates.

According to some internet gurus I am bent, crippled or dead.I feel fine with the exception of C02 headaches if I huff and puff too hard on the dive.I used to think the cramps in my arms could be DCS but it was always cleared up by massage and happens more shallow.I think it's from cocking my speargun a lot:voodoo:.

No Niggles BTW

I used to use modified buhlmann schedules until the exposures started getting silly. with extended bottom times I use vpm now and modify it similarly. adding deep stops and adjusting times until the shape is a little more pleasing to my eyes.

never bent and no 'niggles'
blew off some deco once at little river and felt a little....funny. but that's about it. and it was totally worth it to get out of that place.

The boofay was closing soon, that's a serious issue!

what if they closed the gate and we were stuck there?
I'd rather be stuck in the chamber than little river

Here's my life path, 1977 to 2010:

  1. Blindly following USN
  2. Blindly following Oceaneering He tables
  3. USN + adjustments* to best feel
  4. Blindly following VPM
  5. Blindly following RD (which quickly led to)
  6. RD + adjustments* to best feel (which has led to)
  7. RD + adjustments* w/ V-Planner Live backup (UNLESS it's outside the box of applicability for RD, in which case it's...)
  8. V-Planner Live @ +3, w/ RD + adjustments backup

Right now, I really listen to my body, and will add a cycle of O's at the drop of a hat. It's the best, cleanest diving I can remember, which suits me just fine. I must be getting conservative or something...

All the best, James

* - although "kludge" is a word with the perfect flavor for this application, it just sounds so...well...wrong...
