From a fellow Ontarian,
Head out to the west end of the island, (will require a rental vehicle for your trip) use the string "Westpunt", for resort searches etc. If you can, get in touch with Sunshine. While I did not take the opportunity to see her apartment, I did stop by to see her restaurant after a day of diving with Ocean Encounters West the food was great, and company even better. If I was to repeat my trip (which I wil someday) I think I'll be booking with her for accomodations.
The whole west end of the island is very quiet (Think more along the lines of Algonquin Park/Highway 41 type of an area and not the Muskokas).
There are some small villages out on that end of the island, but it is definately NOT hussle and bussle; in fact even in the man city, Willemstad, while its busy it's nothing like the big smoke.
Just because you're solo doesn't mean that you can't shore dive. There may be some folks here who will be there when you are, and you may also find some potential dive buddies at Tripadvisor. (there's a Curacao specific forum with a lot of repeat visitors).
If you DO book with Sunshine, perhaps she can arrange an introduction to a particualar Canadian couple who winter down there.

One of them loves to dive but seems to be short on available dive buddies.
Anyway, if you're looking for some down time, Curacao is one of the better, and safer, places to find it.
Cheers!
Rick.
