I've heard that 60' per minute is a good descent rate. Something about there being gas spaces within the bones and joints that differ in their pressure relative to the rest of the body. If these particular gas spaces are not adjusted relatively slowly, they fill with liquid and swell up. The body fights the swelling by treating it like an injury. The end result is a greater risk of getting a DCS hit in a joint.
I believe this was figured out by commercial diving companies many years ago. I don't have scientific or other sources of info to present on this, but I do remember reading this somewhere. I'll look around.
