It's my 50th birthday and wife, brother, sister, and their partners are all planning on a vacation of a lifetime in Bali.

Only my wife and I are divers. The other 4 would be unlikely to even try snorkelling.

We are considering staying in Sanur for proximity to dive sites while allowing plenty for the others to do as well.

Does anyone have any good recommendations on dive sites, operators, places to stay?

Contact Underwater Tribe - Mike Veitch on this board. They know Bali (and Indonesia) very well and can set you up with what you need.

How long are you in Bali?
I'm sure your going to see more of the island than Sanur. If you have a general idea of how long you'll have on the coast that would be handy.
How much do you want to dive? Have you ever done any muck diving?

Kamuela in Sanur has pool villas (up to 3 br) for a good price. I agree with dirt farmer. Not much to do in Sanur for more than a few days. Also the dive sites at Amed are a few hours from there I think. You can arrange tours and have Sanur be your launching point. Consider staying in Ubud for a few days in addition to Sanur.

Consider Rama CandiDasa in Candidasa. Beautiful hotel, first-class, great pool, open-air restaurant right by the ocean. I think we paid about $110/night for a two-room suite in April. Get the price set before you go. From Candidasa it's about 20 mins (depending) to Padang Bai where the boats leave for Nusa Penida diving. Or you can go to Tulamben or Amed.

We dove with Geko Dive Bali in PB and liked them.
