I read through the posts to Sel's thread about diving in Indonesia and there seems to be some great suggestions. My husband and I are planning on going in late December/early January - any extra suggestions for places to stay, dive shops, dives?

Seriously ... not meaning to be short, but every question and answer about dive areas, dive companies, dive resorts, dive seasons, etc., has probably already been asked and answered multiple times in this forum. A little research goes a long way!

The dive season is year round in Bali although conditions do vary from time to time. Sun fish, sharks and other large pelagics are best spotted between June and September which is also the time when seas might be both disturbed and enriched by the monsoon winds.

December to March is rainy season (although most days it doesn't rain) and there are fewer divers around - however visibility is sometimes a little reduced around the north and west of the island.

If you wanted to record all the animals you can see when scuba diving in Bali, you'd need to bring along a mini-library of marine guide books. From hairy frogfish, cockatoo leaf fish and pygmy seahorses in Secret Bay and Menjangan on the north west tip of the island, to bumphead parrotfish and reef sharks in the north and east at Tulamben and Candi Dasa, to the sunfish and trevallies of nearby Nusa Penida and Lembongan islands, the marine sights of Bali are truly fascinating.

Have a look at our recommended dive resorts in Bali.

Have a great trip!

You should not miss diving the USAT Liberty shipwreck at Tulamben. It's more an artificial reef than a wreck-enthusiast's site, though elements of the wreck are still apparent. Nearby are lots of great dive sites such as Seraya Secrets, in front of Scuba Seraya and Villa Markisa resorts.

If you are up for cold water and a long boat ride, go to Manta Point at Nusa Penida. In general, Penida and Lembongan dives are subject to sometimes strong currents and colder water than Bali.

I find the Tulamben area more enjoyable than the Menjangan area, but that's individual preference, I guess. Up at Menjangan, there's a famous dive site called Secret Bay, so if you go up there, make that part of your itinerary, too.

As for dive operators, because people do like to go to all of these different areas of Bali if they have the time, I like to use an operator that can arrange for all of the transfers and has their own driver to get you to the places you want to dive. They don't have their own resorts, but they do have their own staff at satellite dive centers in several areas.

For people who aren't keen on traveling around the island, my suggestion is to stay in the Sanur area since the access to boats for going north and east is best there. I use a variety of operators in Sanur depending on exactly what the divers are looking for (tech diving, basic instruction, instructor development, etc.).

Bali is surrounded by an awesome amount of Diversity for your dive choices. When i dived in Bali i dived with BLUE SEASON BALI and did one of their custom made safaris where they arranged everything from pickup from the airport to drop off and everything inbetween. I had a private guide for every dive that i did with them and he was real top quality. Up in the North at Puri Jati i dived with a guy named peter who is a macro genius, he found me mimic octopus, hairy frogfish and some amazing nudibranches.

I would truly recommend them to anybody. They are a little more expensive than competing companies but in my book completely worth it.

Nice and extremely well run diving out of Siddhartha Dive Resort in Kubu, Bali. Kubu is only 5 km further west than Tulamben. The resort is Swiss run and part of Werner Lau's chain of resorts. I was pleasantly surprised by some of the dive sites and the whole set up was impeccable. I was also glad not to be clustered around Tulamben, since the resort lies pretty much alone. Just about all dive sites are 10-15 min by boat and of course they take you to Liberty Wreck. They also do dive sites further away with a combination of car and boat.

recently came from Bali and had a great time at griya santriyan at Sanur. There are a couple of dive operators in the area. i have written my trip report - search for Close Call in Bali..

Thanks Paul,

There really are are so many different styles of diving available in Bali that really you can custom design your whole holiday based upon seeing the best that it has to offer. Diving at that particular time of year will give you a chance to see how Bali diving should really be seen, clear waters as its still dry season, less divers and best of all lower prices!!! haha

The USAT Liberty Wreck is really somewhere that you must dive if yo come to Bali, the marine life on this wreck is second to none. Resident giant barracudas, schooling jacks and trevallies, blacktip and whitetip reef sharks not to mention the macro life that you get....oranate ghostpipefish, robusts, leaf scorpion fish, hairy squat lobsters and of course the famous pigmy seahorses at the bow of the wreck. I'm getting excited thinking about them all...lucky me diving there tomorrow!

I would definitely say however that to get the best out of Bali diving an Advanced Certification is required, allowing you to go that little bit deep er and opening up a whole range of new dive sites to you.
