Key Largo - A Georgia man died today after diving offshore of Key Largo.
Sheriff's dispatchers were notified of an incident off shore at the Elbow, located several miles off shore of Key Largo. A dive boat was coming in to the dock at Garden Cove Drive with a man on board who was not breathing. They'd been performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation all the way in from the reef.
According to witnesses, 47 year old Allen Gregory Kay of Ringgold, Georgia went diving with a friend. He and the friend surfaced from the dive and were swimming toward the boat when Kay began to have trouble. He was pulled on the boat where it was discovered he was not breathing. CPR was administered until he could be returned to shore.
Paramedics transported Kay to Mariner's Hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of his death.

I heard this over the marine radio. The vessel that took the person in was Keys Diver. It was reported over ch 16 that it was a snorkeler but I don't really know the particulars. It was pretty snotty out there that day.

Condolences to the family

the fatality on keys diver(snorkel boat) occured earlier in the week and the female snorkeler was transported to port largo where she expired. the incident yesterday @ elbow reef; as noted in the previous post; involved a vessel operated by silent world,,,,,,,,

Oh my goodness thats even worse

Reefman's correct:

Fort Myers woman, 51, on snorkel trip to Grecian Rocks on Sunday... she made it back to boat and got sick.
Was not reported as a dive/snorkel death by sheriff's office because it seems a pretty obvious heart attack, and she was on the boat. On other hand, attack almost certainly triggered by exertion and she did get sick while in water. It could go either way.

Either way, sad to hear, and condolances to the families. But were there one or 2 incidents? One report says and man from Georgia and another says woman from Ft. Myers.

Weird... we were diving on Elbow Reef with Silent World on Sunday and we are going snorkeling with Keys Divers this Saturday. :11: Maybe I'll stay on shore and drink beer instead :D

Two separate, unrelated incidents. Except both happened off Key Largo.

- April 27, Sunday, Fort Myers woman dies on boat after snorkeling (she felt ill in water, returned to boat).
- April 30, Wednesday, Georgia man dies after surfacing from dive.

It appears to be the second scuba death in Keys so far in '08.
Also two snorkel/freedive-related deaths.

My condolences to Allen Gregory Kay's family. He worked for BCBS TN in the Chattanooga office. I also work for the same company, but across the state.
