Curious if anyone knows of any deals available somewhere in Roatan or Utila for early January? I have airfare from Chicago for $150 (past credit, not current deal) which expires at the end of January, so obviously I need to use it. I wish I could take advantage of the FIBR $499 deal, but it expires before I'm able to travel. I could use my airline credit to fly elsewhere, so if you are aware of a deal in Bonaire, Belize, or where ever, I'm certainly interested.

TIA

The $499 special had to be booked by the end of August. They just ran another deal, but it looks like you just missed this one too...you might want to contact them and see if you can work something out :

Didn't see that prior, so thanks for the link. Still, $899 is hard to swallow when the same place was $499 merely weeks prior. I have contacted them, however, to see what they can do.

Whatever...I'm sure you'll easily be able to find an all-inclusive dive vacation elsewhere for less than that ;)

Actually, I did. :D

Hiya Henry

The Seabreeze deal looks pretty good, but what is it your mainly interested in ? Do you want the full on all inclusive Disneyland type resort with it's shaded beds on the beach or are you looking to get out of freezing Chicago for a week of sunshine and diving with resort amenities being secondary.

I can't say that FI would really be my style though. I'm a single traveller and although FIs website doesn't state it, they do have a single supplement worked into their pricing structure. I never found the $899 deal, it was more like $200/night, plus 16% tax. That $899 might end up being more like $1300 when the bills are in.

Deep Blue Divers

in Utila has a deal on. It used to read "low season special" but those words are gone now and it looks like it may extend into January. I've never been there so I can't comment on how the hotel stacks up against the Seabreeze and I'm not sure what they mean by a "full day of diving" though.

FWIW, that's where I'm heading in January. :cool2:

Stout,

Thanks for the info. My main goal, as it always is when on vacation, is to get underwater as much as possible. So Sea Breeze might be nice (and affordable) but it limits my dives to 10 unless I pay for more. I'd probably spend a lot more time snorkeling, even though I'm not much a fan of it.

I have already stayed at FI once, so I'm familiar with the property, and wouldn't hesitate to return. My gripe with that place was mostly the food quality, but by the sound of it that has been cleared up. For me it wasn't that big a deal to begin with as I enjoyed dining at the West End for dinner anyway. I have been in contact with Rich and he has been helpful.

I've been to Utila twice, and honestly wasn't expecting to go back. I just like the vibe of West End and consider the diving between Roatan and Utila a wash. Toss in the hassle of getting to Utila... Roatan just makes more sense to me. However, I have seen Deep Blue from the water as we both passed by and boat-dove their house reef. I thought to myself if I was to return to Utila, it'd be to stay at Deep Blue. Additionally, it seems they are always getting high reviews from divers (like the CoCo View/Roatan = Deep Blue/Utila is about how it added up to me). I have been in contact with Steve and he has been helpful.

When are you scheduled to be at Deep Blue divers? My travel dates will be January 8 - 15.

That's my goal to, to spend as much time diving as I can ( well without overdoing it ) I tend to go for long trips and this one, a month, is a short one for me so I tend to forgo swanky accommodation and spend the cash on the dives.

I to didn't think I'd be returning to Utila. I've been diving Thailand in recent years, mostly because it's inexpensive, well WAS inexpensive. Two dives in the Andaman are now a hundred dollars and a no-AC bungalow is close to thirty a night.

I"m heading for Deep Blue's "in town" shop and hotel, not the resort. I may head out to the resort for the last week of my trip, depending on expenses and if my long history of injuries and other weirdness that happens on these trips doesn't knock me out of the water. As a for instance, last January, in Thailand I got attacked by a dog. 10 days, sitting in my bungalow, with deep puncture wounds, waiting to see if the dog died of rabies, if he did , then I knew I'd need two more shots (Verorab).

I sure like the house reef idea as I'm not out to cover distance when I dive. I'll be in the island from Jan 10 ( the 11th if I can't get a flight, SPS-> Utila ) until Feb 12. Most likely at Deep Blue divers unless they turn out to be really, really, really, weird like eating kittens, and 40 minute dive times.

I'll be the guy in the hat.

Stout,

I'm curious where in Thailand you were going. I was/am planning on moving there for a few months this spring before moving onto the Philippines. I doubt I do much diving there, or at least not until the very end of my stay, as I will be coming off of back surgery to repair a herniated disc. I was hopeful to find myself a $5 bungalo and "rehab" on the beach. From the sound of it this may not be possible.

Although I have not reserved my stay anywhere yet, I'm heavily leaning towards Deep Blue, but on the resort not in town. I do believe I have had my fair share of Utila town. It sounds like you haven't been there in a few years. If that is the case, be prepared for a culture shock. Its not the same Utila you remember from years past. Its very fast passed and busy now. I watched an 80ish year old man get run over by a car and killed earlier this year. No one even stopped to help him as he lay in the street dieing. So, on that note, I'm excited about Deep Blue being accessible only by boat and a resort with a max of 20 guests. That sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.
