I feel like rubbing in the good deals I have gotten in the last few days so here it goes.

I was doing some shoping at Academy the other day and I found some new dive gloves for less than $5. They are Neoprene hunting gloves, only available in camo but who doesn't love camo? Used them today and they work great. I would say that they are probably 5mm gloves.

The other deal is even better. Stoped by Goodwill on my way home from diving today and I found some XL Yellow Force Fin Pros with bungie heal straps. MSRP on these guys is $224. I got them for $6.99 :-) These are exactly the fins I have been wanting for travel and pool work, but since I don't want to give up my Jets for everything else there was no way that I could justify buying them, that is until I found them for $7 :-)

So the moral of the story is, keep your eyes open and you just might find some great deals. I wasn't looking for scuba gear at either of these places but it found me.

Whenever I goto those places all I find is junk. :(

Congrats though, enjoy your new camo and fins

Wow, you found good deals at Academy and Goodwill (esp the Forcefin Pros). Unfortunately the Goodwill, Salvation Army or St Vincent dePaul near where I have lived in the past few years (Boston, Silicon Valley) seldom have scuba stuff and anyway, tend to be overpriced for used or almost worn-out stuff. I have better luck on eBay.
Dive safely.

I have found thrift stores to be very hit or miss. Most of the time when I go I find absolutely nothing worthwhile, but every once in awhile I find a deal like this so I keep going back. This is the first time I have found scuba gear there, before it has been camera and electronics stuff.

Craigslist is the same, very hit or miss but I got two ok condition(older) all metal scubapro regs, 30lb of lead, fins, belt, old 35mm dive camera and case for 50$.
I just bought it cause lead is 3$/lb at the LDS.
If you live in a big city or near one, check <cityname>.craigslist.com
and used<cityname>.com
They are also great for kitting up to start, often full sets, one of those 775$ for everything incl tank type deals like the one in the ads here, listed way below cost
with a smilar message to:
bought kit for girlfriend, she wouldn't go.

get different girlfriend...

I check out the thrift stores also. I have found some good deals and some junk. Pawn shops are the worst, unless you know someone who owns one and can clue you in on incoming gear. The best place I have even found for gear was Estate sales. When i hit the big sales in Dallas ( Highland Park, University, etc. ) in the million dollar houses I head straight for the garage! I once hit an Estate sale and I got their a little late for the opening and as I was headed back their was a guy coming towards me from the garage with two brand new looking tanks, and two big bags of stuff. I was so jealous I just looked at him and said " lucky" , he just smiled. I did find a great O'Neill shorty for $10 in perfect condition that I used in the shop for a while for students.

Nothing scuba-related, unfortunately, but I did go there on a shopping spree yesterday fo less than $7. New long pants, new shorts, and 3 books :) I love fashion-obsessed people. Yesterday's fashions are my bargain clothing. Ha!

Another place to maybe try is Play It Again Sports. The one I went in, though, was more for a laugh. 1980s reg sets for $60. That sort of thing.
