I plan to dive the Great Barrier Reef in april/may accompanied by a non-diving buddy and am looking for locations where I could make day trip scuba trips to good sites without excessive boat trip times in and out.
I understand Lizard Island is a good choice but there are probably others.Any advice would be appreciated.

where will you be based? I am assuming you will be in either Cairns or Port Douglas. If so then i would reccommend quicksmart which goes to 3 spectacular sites on agincourt reef. I dont know of any day trips to lizard island unless you are staying there, and its very expensive. The coral around green island and fitzroy island is not nearly as good as that on the outer reefs. Most of the outer reefs are suitable for diving and snorkeling as the reefs break the surface at low spring tides. most boats take 2-3 hours to get to the reefs. There is a new boat called thunderbolt which operates from fitzroy island to moore reef it takes 24 minutes to get to the reef, but you still have to get a boat to fitzroy which takes about an hour. visit www.ragingthunder.com.au for details. have a great trip
happy christmas

See the link below for a comprehensive list of all day boat operators from Cairns, Port Douglas and many other locations around Australia.

As the Great Barrie Reef is quite a way off shore in most parts you won't be getting around getting on a boat to see a part of it that is worthwhile checking out.

Looking forward to see you there !
