I know you are laughing at building your oun gear but in the early 50's we had to. I started diving with a helmet built from a hot water heater. Popular Mechanics plans on how to build an air pump from cans. It worked! They also published an article on converting an air craft oxygen regulator for diving. It was a lot like flying: if you survive they call it experience and if not they call it "pilot error.
