Would you consider this good design? Pictured is a DirZone 50029 SPG but many dark faced SPGs are designed like this.

Not sure I feel good about this design - omitting the 0-50bar range in dark seems like an iffy choice.
 
This encourages you to be on the surface before you can't read the gauge, I guess. But no, I don't think it's a good design.

FWIW, I see DGX SPGs don't do this.

Aren’t most of the spgs in the world coming out of the same few factories around Italy and China?
I think this is a QC issue with the stencil for the fluorescent paint rather than a „design choice“ but I could ve wrong
