Hi dbteel,
You've received some good feedback on the desirability of dive accident insurance, but it seems the core of your question has yet to be answered.
I am a long time DAN member and consider it a worthy organization, and a bargain at an annual fee of $29. The membership gets you:
1. DAN's publication, "Alert Diver" magazine, which largely covers dive safety & health issues, and as of early this year also includes a subscription to "Skin Diver" magazine;
2. Access to both emergency & non-emergency phone numbers where you/your physician can obtain medical advice from dive medicine specialists;
3. Supports DAN's annual compilation of dive accident statistics, the only systematic program like this in the country;
4. Supports DAN research projects, such as studies on DCS, diabetes & diving, etc.
5. Entitles you to $100,000 in TravelAssist benefits, which includes emergency medical evacuation from anywhere in the world, plus ancillary services, including continued medical monitoring of the injured diver, legal assistance including bail bonds, repatriation of traveling companions & dependent children, return of a rental vehicle, cash advances of up to $250 for medical emergencies, help in the recovery of lost or stolen belongings, and a range of personal services such as contacting relatives & employers. They will even send a needed prescription you left behind.
6. Allows you to purchase one of their 3 dive accident protection plans, which as an excellent value. If you wish to read a detailed coverage of these plans, the April issue of "Undercurrent" (www.undercurrent.org) carries a comprehensive article on them.
Hope this is what you were looking for. If you have remaining questions, I'd be happy to attempt to field them.
Best regards.
