I've been thinking about the Dacor Vipor regs. Does anyone have any experience with any of these, good or bad? What do you think about them and about Dacor in general?

Thanks,

The ScubaRedneck

I've been thinking about it lately also. i have one of the early ones that's been in storage almost since I got it. It didn't perform well in cold water/wether and therefore is useless to me.

I use a Viper second stage as an octopus. I like the side exhaust because there is no "right-side up", and it's ow-profile. I would not use it as a primary, though, because it breathes a bit wet and the air seems to "hit the side of the mouth" instead of coming "straight in" like a conventional reg. I don't know how else to describe the sensation.

Perhaps using the Viper with the Dacor first stage would do better (I use an Oceanic first).

i use the vipers , i have the viper america and the octo, and like them alot. i like them alot because they are light weight and after long dive i dont have jaw fatique at all. also they work well with the exhust valve going to the left or the right. also at depth they work fine because i just came back from cozy where we were at 80+ feet for a couple of dives and i never had a problem.

as for the breathing wet, that problem is caused by you not securing your mouth piece correctly.

mike as for the early ones there was a problem with them and if you contact dacor they can check it out to see if it needs the update, also how cold of water are you talking about because mine have been in the water with the temp in hte low to mid forties without any probs

if you all need any info either PM or email me

Have you had any experience with Dacor as a company? Are they good in terms of service and customer care and such? :booboo:

Mike, what did it do in cold water/weather?

I've been using Dacor regs since 1986. I've always been treated very well by Dacor and its retail agents, particularly when Mares took over Dacor and scrapped all the old models.

Dacor regs are built by Mares so I don't think quality will be an issue (not that it ever was).

I currently have an Eagle DPD Pro with Eagle Octopus. I wish I'd thought about getting the Viper Octopus because as has been previously reported, there is no right way up with the side-exhaust.

I really like the turret on the first stage for the primary reg hose - allows a lot more freedom and prevents me from feeling as though my reg is just about to be yanked from my mouth. This system is also available on some Viper regs.

People have expressed concerns about the strength of the turret, but I have never experienced any problems. Dacor have proven this technology, my old XLE 960 also had a turret first stage.

Re the Viper, some reviews have said that they find it very hard to use the purge button with gloves on because it is quite small.

All Dacor regs are cold-water rated but it you're going really cold below 10c go for Viper metal with the heat sinks that help prevent icing.

Hope this helps and safe diving.

if i had any problems with my dacors it was easy to get it corrected because the company rep is only a phone call away, plus i have only one tech that works on my regs and if i want i can watch him service my regs, at little better piece of mind ofr me

Thanks, tooth.

My metal viper has about 250 dives on it over the past two years. I've been under ice with it and in tropical waters. I've done a bounce dive to 200 feet on air. I obviously trust it.
