I realize it is not the latest and greatest, but I was under the impression that my D70S rig was professional level. I was considering entering a few pictures into the Scuba diving mag photo contest but do not think I can meet the requirement of 300 dpi at 8.5" x 11''. Unless I'm missing something I think the best I can do with the D70s is something like 10" x 6.6" at 300 ppi. I know you can resize photos but is the resolution of the D70S really that outdated?

Thanks for your input.

Well, it depends on how you look at it, but yes, the D70's actual resolution is that outdated (I have and regularly use the same camera). Whether you actually NEED more than 6MP is a separate question, but technically, a 6MP image will not be 300dpi at 8.5x11 (I think you need between 8-9MP for that). And I think a number of stock agencies won't accept photos of less than 10-12MP native resolution.

But for a magazine photo contest, you might be able to get away with resizing, depends on their rules I guess.

Hi c-dog:

I am not sure what the magazine requirements are for your submission, but here is my experience. I shoot with both a D70s and D300, and am just finishing up a book with about 130 photos from both cameras.

Pretty difficult to tell the difference between which subjects were shot with which camera, especially after cropping, resizing, etc. I have had some proofs printed up for final editing, and the D70s does a great job. Just be sure you are shooting/editing in RAW or TIFF, not JPG.

Have Fun,

Dan

C-dog,

I agree with Dan as far as not being able to tell the difference for the size you are asking about. I have shot and published many images with the D70, D300, D700 covers included with never a problem. For the contest your images will be fine, just upsize them. The native resolution for the D70 comes out of camera at 240. When you resize to 300 you get 6.667 by 10. Just interpolate from there leaving your dpi at 300 using Bicubic Sharper and then do some final sharpening and send it in.

While the D70 has fewer megapixels than some of the newer models, I still have many of my earlier uw images being published that were shot with a 5 MP Olympus 5050 , full spreads and covers too. And as Dan said, shoot RAW when you can.

Thanks alot for the information. I feel much better about the resolution on the D70s now. I have printed several of my pictures with this camera and have been very happy with the results. It's nice to know that people have had succcess being published with this equiptment and that you do not really need the latest and greatest rig. Thank you very much, I'll keep shooting away with this one. (not that I have the money to upgrade anyway) Thank you
