Hi all,

Will be traveling to Maui the end of May and probably will have my new D40 (or X if I can afford it) and had a couple of questions.

1. Does any one rent housings? I know I won't have the funds to buy one.

2. What lens is to be used in a housing? I'll probably only have the stock 18-55 or if I get the D40, I'll try and get the 18-135.

Thanks for your help!!

Jeff

I think your least expensive housing is the Fantasea @ around $1000., and the next would be the Ikelite @ $1260. The problem is then you have to choose a lens on your camera to match a port on the housing, ports can add another $500 easily, then there is the strobe thing. I bought a used strobe not dedicated to digital, and a dedicated to digital (good) strobe Ike's DS125's would be in the $600 to 700 range. I have used Ike so far and plan to continue, my favorite is wide angle or portrait shots.

I don't know of anyone renting a housing for a D40, other higher-end cameras maybe, bu usually just P&S. I do have the Fantasea FD40x housing available, and it comes with a standard port. The 18-55 or better the 18-70 is good for UW use. the 18-135 is too long for many ports.

The best lens for that camera is the new Nikon 60mm AFS macro, but it is fairly expensive and may not be out for a couple of months.
