Aloha,
I have been fighting red vertical banding in the dark areas on my photos. I contacted Nikon when I first got the camera and was told it is operator error and that I should overexpose my pics to reduce contrast between light and dark areas.
Now almost 2 years later I have found a post on Nikon website that addresses the problem (Nikon answer ID 13872) I called service and support and the "service representative" said he didn't know anything about a problem - but I should send the body in to be evaluated.
I have now been informed that the body is past its' one year warranty - but it does need repairs at a cost of $200 for "parts replacement and adjustments"
Has anyone else had this problem, and if so, is Nikon just ripping us off by ignoring until warranty expires?:shakehead:

Yes I did! They refused to admit there was a flaw, but I received the camera back after some major repairs. They replaced a printed circuit board, "adjusted" the autofocus, did a firmware upgrade, and "recalibrated" the sensor. I haven't been diving yet to check and see if the problem has been fixed.
