Just coming back from a wonderful trip to Curacao, me and my brother spent two weeks diving in January 2009.

We stayed at All West Apartments & Diving in Westpunt. Didn't really know about that place before, but it was an excellent choice. Organization was perfect, we were picked up at the airport and got our rental car immediately. The guy that guided us to All West was very friendly and even went with us to the nearby Centrum Supermarket before heading north to Westpunt so that we can make our grocery shopping!!

The one thing that stands out in All West is total freedom and independence regarding diving, and they have probably the best view / terrace on the island. The resort is located on top of the cliffs (approx. 20 ft. high) directly oceanfront. Every appartment has sea view and a private terrace. There are BBQ grills on the public part of the terrace.

Regarding diving it's the perfect place to be. I said freedom - that means you just pick up a tank at the diving room at All West (24h available) and go diving. Or you load your car with as many tanks as you want and go diving on some other spot on the island. No questions asked, no restrictions, no nonsense. That's how it should be, and we have seen in other hotels (e.g. Habitat) that this is not always the case.

A small drawback on the diving room is the cleanliness of the floor - sometimes you can practically wash your divesuit when it drops on the floor - and the plastic boxes for carrying your dive gear are almost all damaged and unusable. Removable wooden floor covers would be nice and are standard in many other places.

The Ocean Encounters West dive center is located about half a mile north from the resort. You need to go there to check in, and if you want to rent gear or do a tour with the boat. People are very friendly and helpful there, and their level of service is superb. But don't expect too much of the boat dives - you can do almost everything from shore if you have a car. Of course the social aspect of a boat dive is nice so be sure to book at least a couple of them.

Westpunt is quite far away from the island's center - Willemstad - and there's not much life there. Which is perfect for a dive holiday, but if you want to go out dancing at night it is of course difficult. In any case, you can enjoy hanging out with buddies at the Apartment's wonderful terrace or go socialize with good food & beer at Sunshine's Sol Food Restaurant.

Regarding the divesites on the island - which I will describe below - my favourites have been Playa Porto Mari, the Superior Producer shipwreck and the Tugboat.

Playa Porto Mari because of the excellent facilities (it's a developed beach), the free use of the dive shop facilities and the friendly people there, and the excellent circular reef they have there, stuffed with lots of marine life. And the restaurant offers a superb view and good food at reasonable prices.

The Superior producer is a 240-foot shipwreck located in front of the port entrance in Willemstad at 100ft depth and is an excellent wreck dive with good visibility.

The tugboat is a nice divesite in the south of Jan Thiel Beach / Caracas Bay. It is a small vessel located not very deep (about 15 feet) but with very nice marine life. People frequently report sea horses there. If you dive along the shore after passing the tug boat, there's a nice steep wall you can dive along. It's a giant rock in the sea and offers spectacular views as well as the possibility to do a nice deep dive.

I will post detailed descriptions of the dive site later below on this thread. :)

I uploaded several photos and videos to this site as well as to my blog at Travel tips, recommendations for travellers | Puertoricanrum.com!

Hi Markus,
We missed seeing you before you left. I'm glad you had a great time not only in Curacao but here in Westpunt. Were you able to find the rum on your hunt? And enjoy a loempia? See you on your next visit. Call ahead for your favorite table ;)
Hugs and fishes, Sunshine

Hi Markus,

Thank you very much for your report, especially for your remarks about possible improvements we can make in our dive locker room.

The problem with the broken dive gear boxes is adressed with Louis, and we will get new ones as soon as possible. To help keeping the floor in the locker room a bit more dry, wooden floor covers might help a bit, we will see what we can do about that.

So by time of your next visit, probably also the last drawbacks you found will be removed and you can spend an even nicer vacation with us!

Best regards from Curacao
Andreas

Hi Markus,

The poll is a good idea, but my favourite dive sites on Curacao - except for Watamula - are not even on it:

Playa Shon Mosa (shore dive)
Playa Piscadó in front of All West (shore dive, accessible also for divers not staying at All West)
Rediho City (Boat Dive)
Scooter (Boat Dive)

Kind regards from Curacao
Andreas

Thanks for the report Markus. After reading it and referencing my log book, it makes me want to go back soon. Nice pics by the way. I wish I would have dove the Superior Producer. It looks awesome. Maybe next time.

The list below is of all of my favorites in Curacao only because these are all the sites that I dove. There wasn't a bad dive out there but out of these, I would say the Mushroom Forest and Bullen Bay were the most interesting. I also liked Nos Cas because of the convenience – we stayed at Habitat.

Nos Cas (House reef at Habitat)
Franks Reef
Witches Kitchen
Pelican Beach
Mushroom Forest
Long Beach
Watamoola
Mikes Place
Radio City
Devil's Hole
Snake Bay
Bullen Bay

Hey Sunshine,
sorry we were not able to pass by your home before leaving, the last 2 days were REALLY busy. Finally in the last night they took our car's radio, right in front of the appartment.

Will certainly miss your good cooking & great atmosphere on the terrace! Give my regards to all the guys that are still there and of course a big hug to Jack!!

Ah and I didnt find the Cacique rum, they told me its not sold on Curacao. So I got some other stuff. But we went to the Loempia place, it was awesome!! So much taste for only NAF 2.- thats incredible! The place's name is Wa On, by the way ;)

See you definitely next time.

a big hug, Markus

Hi Andreas!
Good to hear All West is already reacting ;-) In any case, our stay in All West was perfect and I'm looking forward to coming again someday. I definitely want to return to Curacao, and if I go to Curacao it'll be All West for sure ;)

So keep counting the days matey, soon we'll have you back here in Europe! Enjoy the remaining time on the island!!

Markus

Hey WaterWolf,
wow I just notice I have still not seen a lot of dive sites so there's a lot yet to discover next time! When have you been to Curacao the last time?

I totally agree with you - there wasn't a single bad dive in Curacao. Its just all too beautiful. Still some sites stand out because of their unique features - thats what makes the island so interesting!

For me a big part of my diving experience on Curacao was not just under water - on many dive sites the way to get there is an adventure by itself (take Long Beach, for example) and it's a great way to explore both new dive spots as well as the island's nature off the beaten tourist track.

Don't forget some of the other sites down here around Willemstad. Director's bay and Double Reef are two of my favourites here although not the easiest shore entry on either. Varsenbaai has been regularly delicious; I've seen more eagle rays there than at all the other dive sites combined. Tubgoat is rightly listed as a favourite here - I've not tried the drift from Director's to Tugboat yet but I've heard that can be pretty stunning. Only place Mark's seen a manta out here I believe.

I've been in Thailand for the last few years and have seen some of the most amazing reefs out there but Curacao for me is regularly beautiful, easy, with very little current at most of the dive sites. It's for divers who enjoy diving.

On a personal note - I'm a dive instructor; I know a lot of you guys come here for a week or two and love it and want to come back but we dive here almost every day and any job you do can become very routine after a while - even in paradise! I can say that from a diving perspective however I am Very happy that I moved here; I'm a diver first and an instructor second and the absolute pleasure of diving here means that so far, there has been nothing routine about it :D

So that in itself should sell Curacao to anybody. Now... if the tourist board would just like to slip me that large brown envelope of crisp, non-sequential, American Dollars, that would be sweeeet. :eyebrow:

Dive Happy

I can see there's still lots to explore--which gives me even more reasons to come back!

Crowley, you mention Thailand - I go there in march and plan to do my AOW license there. Any recommendations where to find the most beautiful reef?
