We just returned from a great vacation to Curacao. We loved The Royal Sea Aquarium Resort and all of the unlimited access to the Sea Aquarium located 50 yards away from the hotel. The Dolphin Academy and Animal Encounters sections of the aquarium were great for kids (and adults) of all ages. Dolphin and sea lion shows were very entertaining and the swims with these animals were better than the ones in Sea World in Orlando.

For diving, we found the reef off of the aquarium to be one of the best on the island rivaling our favorite dives sites on Bonaire. The Animal Encounters shallow and sheltered dive is great for all levels of divers and the encounters with big fish, stingrays (without the barbs!), sharks and sea turtles (the latter two behind plexiglass fencing) was a blast. For diving elsewhere on the island, we recommend The Dive Bus, a boutique dive operation run by two fabulous, fun hosts Mark and Suzy. If you're a small group, they use an air-conditioned really cool van (with fun interior decorations) for wheels. Larger groups travel in the comfort of a new air conditioned touring van. Their two other dive masters, Andy and Kevin, are a blast! Surface intervals flew by while we enjoyed picnic style lunches included in the two tank dive pricing. There's also great shore diving right off of their beach.

We had an awful experience with a large dive operation called Ocean Encounters who treated us like they're the only dive operation down there. One of the main reasons for our visit to Curacao was a special dolphin dive that they say they have island control over. Turns out not to be true - you can book this dive through The Dive Bus. Anyway, Ocean Encounters double booked our prearranged special dive (despite written and in person confirmations) and then both over booked and screwed up the timing of our rescheduled dive. Needless to say, we were never able to make that dive and our family was very disappointed. They haven't responded to any recent emails I've sent requesting a refund of our deposit. The one response I received said "our book keeping department is investigating the case". Sad....

I welcome emails from anyone interested in hearing more about our diving experiences including our grief with Ocean Encounters.

Anyway, we loved our stay in Curacao and if you prefer a new suite hotel (only 30 suites) with great views of the ocean and dolphin/sea lion shows, check out The Royal Sea Aquarium Resort. The suites were great, the staff was friendly and helpful and the restaurant on premises was one of the best we experienced on the island.

Glad to hear you had a good time excepting the one 'glitch.' My wife, buddy & I are headed to Bonaire this Spring if all goes well; for possible future trips, one consideration would be Curacao. I'm mainly interested in diving, but it's my understanding Curacae has more 'landside other stuff' to do than Bonaire (for those interesting in such)?

Richard.

Hi Richard - yes, Curacao has more to do - especially night life related - there are some wild places on the beach. We found it very difficult to find a good restaurant for dinner (except for the one at the hotel) and impossible to find good service. We are by no means snobs when it comes to food - give me a burger and fries and I'm happy - but even our friends who live there (transplanted Americans) complain about this.

We've been to Bonaire twice and just love it. We stayed at Buddy Dive and Divi Flamingo. If you're interested, I could tell you about those places. We found the food to be much better on Bonaire. Curacao has more 'upscale' places to stay than Bonaire but the overall atmosphere of Bonaire, in our eyes, was much more comfortable and down to earth.

Welcome to :sblogo: and :newyear:

Our group is down to stay at Eden Beach resort; it's well-spoken of on this forum, although I've read post after post saying good things about Buddy Dive.

Your comment on the poor service in Curacao (particularly as some U.S. folks you knew also commented on it) has me wondering something. On this forum I've seen a number of posts re: Bonaire restuarants being more 'European' in service/dining style; meal may take 2 hours, made from scratch, waiter might think it's rude to rush right out when you're finishing one thing (i.e. appetizer) & whiz the entree right out, and might not give you the check until told (& won't hang around close to make that easy).

Is this the sort of 'poor' (ahem...'culturally different') service you're talking about on Curacao, or was it something else?

Richard.

Another Happy New Year & Welcome to ScubaBoard!

Hi Richard,

No, it wasn't the European effect. At one place, Hemmingway's at Lion's Dive, it was basic lousy service - their manager acknowledged it and apologized profusely for it. At another place next to Mambo's (cant remember the name of the place), it was due to employee turnover according to our waiter. Same at a few other places. My friends who live on the island (transplanted americans) say it's work ethic related. In addition to the open air restaurant at the Royal Aquarium Resort (which was very good), the Rib Factory had great ribs and great service - cute waitresses as well!

Hi Steve etal, Welcome to Scuba Board.
I have dove both Bonaire and Curacao and love the diving on both islands. You are right Curacao "seems to have more night life" but I have never found that a problem on Bonaire either. And for non-diver stuff - there is plenty do do on Bonaire. Island touring is fun, the small shops and restaurants intriguing and there are always the nude beaches.

Welcome to Scubaboard Steve. I have done Curacao, Bonaire, and Aruba quite a few times. I worked in Curacao for 4 months and enjoyed all the diving in Curacao, course we would sneak over to Bonaire for a weekend now and then also. We now go to Aruba every year as we have a timeshare and it seems to have more for my wife to done while I am diving. also the food is great,

For another persepctive - one of the reasons we prefer Curacao is we found so many more good restaurants than Bonaire.
