I forgot who asked me for this... Fireworks are for sale and used between Christmas and New Years. The hotels have elaborate displays; some individuals also put on some good shows, others just noisy ones.

The very long string of firecrackers are called pagaras. Many business close at noon on NYE and throw a party with the highlight being the lighting of the pagara. In Westpunt the Lodge has a display at midnight, the neighbors light off smaller pagaras in front of their houses and everyone walks around wishing each other a Happy New Year. Our dogs are not happy.
