Why do I see posts where people are cutting them off their BCs? My Knighthawk has one and I think its pretty comfy and helps me get it snug up to my back. Just curious.

One less thing to fasten. A little less bulk.

BTW, it's Cummerbund

A cummerbund should serve the same purpose as a crotch strap, preventing a BC from riding up. If it doesn't serve that purpose for you or make the BC more comfortable somehow, then I suppose it's just one more thing to do and could be a nuisance, like getting in the way and velcro-ing itself to the wrong things, behind you while putting it on, whatever. And probably some people are just purists/snobs about it. (I'm not fond of BCs that only have a velcro cummerbund and no strap, as velcro wears out - I had one that started popping open when I hit the water until I sewed a fresh layer of velcro on top.)

Along the lines of what Damselfish said, these days I am using a backplate harness with a crotch strap, but when I used I BC with a cummerbund I don't recall ever thinking it was uncomfortable. And really, what sounds more uncomfortable: "cummerbund" or "crotch strap"? As for Velcro versus things that last longer, like buckles, well, I should be so lucky to dive enough to wear out gear.

I hate cummerbunds and wear a crotch strap. They are not even close in their effectiveness in keeping BCs stable and low on your back. You never hear a diver with a crotch strap complain about getting a reg to the head. :D

Of course, now that I posted that, SOMEONE will have to prove me wrong! :D :D :D

How much buoyancy does a cummerbund add? That may be one reason folks want to cut them, if dropping a lb. or so of lead is the benefit.

If I could drop 2 lbs (which I doubt) by replacing my cummberbund with a crotch strap, I would do it, otherwise I wouldn't bother.
