Cuba Scuba? Varadero In August?

The hotel is the Brisas del Caribe. All inclusive, < $600pp my son and I. Worth doing? What is the diving like, and what cost? Water temps? Exposure protection requirements?

Any and all info welcome!

Watch out for 'summer' storms---if you know what I mean...

My wife has dove Veradero, not terribly impressed. We did Cayo Largo a few years later and was very pleseantly surprised. Cost was comparable to any where else in the Carribean, water was cooler (January) but 3mm full suit was fine. $600 is pretty good, depends on star rating of hotel, personally wouldn't do anything less than 4 in Cuba. Checkout Debbie's Carribean review website, great info.

It says 4 star. Should clarify, $600 INCLUDES airfare as well.

Very tempting.

I need to decide very soon.

Sounds good, I would go just for the holiday.....and getting to dive is just a bonus.

The price you are mentioning is good; summer (now) is busy with Cubans. Today there are over 500 clients at that hotel.I spend a weekend there last month and I also used to work there as a diving instructor. The Hotel is ok for that price; food is ok, better than many others in Varadero with the same price. Beach side is good. You would be at 8km from downtown and at only 200mt from la Marina (where the boat diving leaves from)Cost to go downtown by taxi about 10cuc one way.Cost to do private full day Havana trip about 250cuc but I bed you can get it for less.Bring good sun protection. Today water temperature is 25c is cloudy but still hot.Wetsuit for your dives 3mm shorty is good enough.it is rainning every afternoon but it is for good.Have a look at varadiving.jimdo.com it is still poor on info and bad English but is better than nothing.

Gcarter, Check out Cuba-Junky | Scuba Diving : Matanzas - Varadero - Playa Larga - Playa Giron a website for cuba. It has all the divecentres in Varadero listed. $600 for a holiday package is good, you get your money's worth if you spend time at the pool drinking rum. Food in any hotel in Cuba is not great, the country is very limited in its rescources but passable. Diving in Varadero: not rated very good but if you dive there on a free day its a bonus. Its more worth doing the jeep safari or a trip to Havana. If you dive, watch out for bad equipment.
