I have been diving the same lake for about 8 years now. I know its not the Bonaire or Grand Cayman but it provides a chance to dive close by. I always see fish and scavenge up something. This year in particular has been more interesting than past years when it comes to marine life. Diving today I spotted an American eel, about 2.5 feet in length in about 18 feet of water. Add color, warm water and some vis and it was similar to following a an eel in the tropics. Last week I followed a painted turtle in about 8 feet of water. Fish abound but this year there are large schools of very small fish. Congregating under a dock this morning there was easily thousands of small fish schooled together. Can't tell what they are but all under an inch, partially transparent and reminded me of aquarium neon tetras without the bold blue and red. There are always bass, sunnies and perch. Happy diving.

Great resource, thanks. Is there any way of knowing which ones are diveable, either legally or practically?

Not sure about which ones are, except the ones I've dove. There is a law in CT that say we're not allowed to use boat ramps. I guess you could call the DEP 860-424-3000[TABLE="width: 90%"]

I have heard a lot about Candlewood over the years. Where are the better places to dive in that lake?

What lake? Is there public access for diving?

Lake Quassapaug and there is no public access.

I dove Squantz Pond many years ago and it is public and was used for diving regularly. It is a state park and divers used to set up on picnic tables located right by the water.

Never dove Candlewood. I recall talking with a dive shop in Brookfield and it sounded interesting, especially the part about remnants of an old town that rests on the bottom. Beware boat traffic on Candlewood though.

Good luck.

Dove West Hill Lake in New Hartford today for the first time. Nice easy dive. 68 degrees around 14ft but major thermocline at around 20 - 29 ft. Temps dipped to mid-fifties. Saw some trout and sunfish mostly. Good practice. EWeingarden was my buddy. Looking forward to diving there again.

I'm interested in diving West Hill. Where do you do your entry and exit from? I heard that some of the parking is for town residents only.
