cnn reports: A luxury cruise line will re-evaluate whether to offer
future cruises off the coast of Somalia after pirates attempted to
attack one of its ships early Saturday.
The modern-day pirates were in two small boats and carrying machine
guns and a rocket-propelled grenade when they attempted the attack on
Seabourn Cruise Lines' "Spirit" about 5:35 a.m. local time Saturday,
Deborah Natansohn, president of the cruise line, told CNNRadio.
The ship was carrying 150 passengers and a crew of about 160.
The ship, she said, immediately instituted its emergency response
system. "The occupants of those boats did not succeed in boarding the
ship and eventually turned away ... our captain and crew did a
terrific job taking responsive action."
Passenger Mike Rogers of Vancouver, Canada, said the pirates were
shooting and sending rockets at the boat.
"The captain tried to run one of the boats over, but they were small
boats, about 25 feet long," he told CNNRadio affiliate CKNW in
Vancouver.
"Each one had four or five people on it, and (the captain) said he
was going to do anything to keep them from getting on board."
The captain, however, did not hit the alarm button to alert
passengers of the emergency, Rogers said.
"He announced it over the speakers, because he was scared people
would run up on deck, and he didn't want people on deck because they
would have been shot."
The cruise ship eventually outran the pirates' boats, Natansohn said.
One person suffered minor injuries, she said, but did not elaborate.
"There's some minor damage done to the ship," Rogers said. "There's
no water right now, for instance, in some places, and I believe one
of the grenades actually went off in one of the cabins, but everyone
on board is fine."
The boat is now en route to the Seychelles Islands, Natansohn said.
On Thursday, the United Nations' World Food Programme warned that
hijackings off the coast of Somalia were restricting the delivery of
needed food assistance to the country.
"The southern Somali coastline is one of the most dangerous in the
world," the WFP said on its Web site.
"In recent months, WFP's operations in Somalia have been sabotaged by
the hijackings of two vessels carrying relief food. Ship owners are
now demanding armed escorts to travel in these waters."
Natansohn said efforts were underway Saturday to locate the pirates.
"We have notified U.S., Canadian and Australian authorities, because
most of our passengers come from those three countries, as well as
local authorities in Africa."
"Seabourn 'Spirit' has offered itineraries in that part of the world
before, but we'll obviously be looking at the incident to determine
what to do in the future," she said.
Rogers said, "we're always looking for adventure, but this is
probably a little more than we would normally look for."

What a scoop, eh? The laughing face of the lil boat driver seems to give the impression that this is more of a joy ride than a pirate attack.. none the less, it stands to substantiate that this sort of water born pirate style attacks still occur in the world today, even in the Carribean, and will continue to do so until Cruise ships and private boaters who insist on traveling those waters arm themselves and aren't afraid to fight back. Surely a cruise ship could pack some bang sticks that would have put those little white boats to the bottom!

You are right on the money!

I'd think a few riflemen on the big ships would have quite a bit of fun sinking the little boats. What a surprise the pirates would get, eh?

Narco-pirates still exist in the Bahamas and the Philippines but they generally target smaller boats that are more vulnerable, easier to board and have fewer people. It is best to use caution around remote, uninhabited cayes. Somalia certainly is not safe. A revised itinerary is definitely in order for that cruise ship. I hear much better things about Tanzania (the neighboring country).

I could say something extremely nasty right about now, but at the risk of offending any divers or natives of Somalia we might have here on Scubaboard, I'll refrain... :)

Randy, could you imagine the surprise of the Somalians on that boat if the ship had on it something to the effect of a mini-gun or .50 that could be mounted on either side of the bridge should such aggressive small vessel appear such as these? The lil white boats show up shooting rounds all over green-acre and the ships crew pulls this out and lights em up with a few hundred rounds shot from a stable position...who wins that one?

SStrecker - Right? What was the selling point for this?? "..where we'll cruise war and poverty stricken Somalia where you can get breath taking views of speeding fishing boats carrying armed rebels assaulting the ship! Lucky guests may get a few rounds embedded in the door of their cabin to dig out and take home as a souvenir!"

Mini gun, too much brass to clean up, too much ammo to store. How about a Bofors L60 40mm cannon? Gives true "stand off" range and it will mess up almost anything out there IF needed.

Well, at least there are pictures.. because when someone asks you how your cruise was, and you tell them that you were attacked by pirates, your going to need pictures to back that one up!!

About the only weaponry a cruise ship has aboard are a few shotguns for skeet off the stern. However, with the right shells, a shotgun could do a bit of damage, but the guys in the little boat has better range. I would have done what the cruise ship captain did, just out run the little buggers.

Quite a teensy cruise ship, with only 150 passengers aboard. I like that the captain tried to run one of the pirate boats down, ha ha.

What's out in that part of the world to attract tourists?
