Hi All,

My wife twisted my arm for a cruise for our anniversary. The cruise goes to Grand Cayman, Roatan, Belize and Costa Maya. This is not really supposed to be a "dive" vacation for me its an anniversary and my wife does not dive. :(

But we were going to check out spots in Roatan and Belize for a land stay dive vacation in the fall. Any recommendations to narrow the spots would be a great help.

Thanks

Your cruise ship visits won't give you much of a look into what is available for a prolonged visit in the fall.

Belize, as a cruise ship stop, is Belize City- no place for a week long vacation. The diving in Belize is located a considerable boat ride away from where you will disembark. It can be done, and I really see no reason to deviate from the offerings supplied by the cruise ships. You'll have a good dive. You really will not see any of the beautiful resort environments that Belize offers... it is a country of many, many islands. All in all, however, any non-diver with a sense of adventure might really enjoy one of the many Belize out islands for a whole week- as long as they are easily amused!

While she is waiting for your dive adventure in Roatan to be completed, she might do well to do a little pre-shopping of what might be available at this island. She can jump in a cab and be taken to Fantasy Island, CoCo View, then over to Bay Islands Beach Resort, Anthony's Key- those are the major AI resorts... and to any one of several ala carte places on the West End that others here will add to the list.

An ideal non-diver in either of thes environments is a sunbathing reader. There's not much to do on the Cays of Belize or Roatan other than dive.

Have her do a little exploring and assist in selecting where she might want to take refuge for the week while you stay wet.

I'd say the best thing you could spend money on this trip, aside for lavishing your wife with gifts and rum, would be a discover scuba class while you are on Roatan. DSD is quick and painless, and you might find that you have a dive buddy in the making for your future trip.

If she is fervently against diving you might be best served taking the cattle car to West Bay and diving with Banarama or one of the other dive ops on West Bay. The beach is lovely, and it is much nicer than what's available in West End (for non-divers).

I imagine they do those right on the ship in the pool.

Thanks for the advice. My wife would read and lay in the sun. We will do what we can to get the lay of the land for a fall trip.

Well if you can't get her to dive...then I would suggest either Fantasy Island or some of the West End ops...My personal experience was at CCV which was amazing, however I don't think a non-diver, unless they loved to snorkel would really have a lot to do there. They don't really have a good beach unless you stay at one of the beach houses. I have never been to FIBR but I have seen the beach as we went by in the boat on the way to our dives, and I know they have a pool.
Just pop in the different resorts in the search engine and you will get lots and lots of info/reviews on each of them.
Have a great time and work on getting her to Dive!!!

Thanks eveyone for your first hand information and suggestions. We will make the most of our cruise and I am sure that we will find something for the fall.
