Crocodile kills, eats fisherman in La Encrucijada Biosphere Reserve! I caught this tidbit in the news feed on my iPad - Search is on for 10-foot crocodile who ate a man while fishing in Mexico

While La Encrucijada is on the Pacific coast in Chiapas, almost due west of Belize, the species of crocodile found there is the same species found in Cozumel. The news item doesn't say where the fisherman was - in the mangrove swamps, off the coast, whatever. But this would certainly make me nervous about swimming close to the northern marina or by the Punta Sur mangrove swamps, where crocodies have been commonly sighted.

This guy was right behind the beware of croc sign by the parking lot of Palencar beach. He was probably 7'

This video of a gator was posted here in Tampa Bay a couple weeks ago. When I was about 8 years old I would dig through ponds and brush to collect golf balls from the neighborhood golf course and sell them back to the golfers. Looking back I question what I was thinking. I would have been a nice snack.

Keep in mind this man had a family, and was loved. I've made my share of inappropriate jokes in my life, so I'm not preaching to anyone.

At the expense of sounding like the local chamber of commerce, I have never in my 25 years here heard of a human being, bitten or attacked by a croc. The breed here are called "Morets Crocodiles" and are much smaller than those in the Nile or Australia. Given that, a 10 ft croc which are here would scare the poop out of me--so I stay out of their way.

One time 20 some years ago, Memo and I were walking upstream in an outlet for Columbia Lagoon just to see what was there—when we realized what was there. We did not want to be the first in Cozumel to end up as croc poop so did a prompt u turn. I think that Memo and I both think the other was chicken at that time but we don't discuss it much.

One other time, way back when, at the old Playa Mac beach I saw a croc try to take a dog who was by the swamp. Didn't work-- but the dog was sure upset.

Divers should know... crocodilians hate bubbles. One good floof from a regulator and they scamper as fast as their big ol' tail can carry them. As kids we would swim under a peacefully sleeping gator and purge. Nowadays that would be considered harassment, so don't do it... unless they get a bit aggressive. Works on sharks too. :D
