critters on pen. malaysia

I would love to do "muck" diving in malaysia, but not sure i have the funds to go to mabul. Any way to see the critters without going to Eastern Malaysia?

Sounds cool, as I am a marine biology student! I wont be there till August, although I will contact them! Anyone else have suggestions to get my critter fix cheaply from peninsula malaysia? The 360 usd flights to lembeh and manado, and the hotel prices in sipadan are a little pricey.

There are plenty nudi's on Tioman, Aur, etc.
You can get a bus to Mersing and then a boat out to the Islands.
Various prices depending on the resort.
If you choose a long house and a fan then prices can be very cheap.
If you use the same dive operation all the time then you may be able to negotiate a price for dives.

There is this turtle research project at Redang and they are also open to volunteers. great diving there as well. Redang is a place which I am sure your girlfriend will like as well. See below :

almost not existent on peninsola malaysia (east side). there is no way around borneo
