Just to close this off: I installed both cressi software and subsurface on 64-bit Windows 7 ent. with only a slight hitch: NI driver popped up an error message. "Run as administrator" and a couple of reboots fixed it. So my problem is definitely the 64-bit lose 8.1 pro on the samsung ativ laptop, not the interface, cables, or whatever.
