Actually, Italy does the best pizza. We invented it.

You may have invented it in Italy, but the best pizza makers all must have immigrated to the US. :D When Italians make pizza, it's too dry.

Eh? Go to Italy and try some. Some people complain that it's too thin and liquid-y. If anything, it's American pizza that's dry, usually because it has a really thick crust.

How about this???

God created animals and things to evolve along with thier changing environment

Agreed....... Someone Had to "Create" Evolution. ;)

I'm not actually "up on" what "creationists" are argueing for in regard to text book useage in schools. It's just not something I have a lot of time for but, personally, I haven't heard anyone suggest that all science books be replaced with the Bible. However, speaking of handicaping our children, I can't even fathom "people" handicaping their children by not teaching them Gods revelations to us. Though, I don't expect the public schools system to do it, to me, that is the monster of all possible holes that could exist in education.

Handicapping children by not teaching "God's revelations..."

A "monster of all possible holes in education."

No Buddhist parents are shoving the Bible down their kids' throats. You are. You seem to believe that because you've found whatever solace you have in a book that the rest of the world is somehow lacking because we don't "get it" and should. Guess what. I don't get it. I'm not sure I want to get it. I understand that lots of people do and it brings them comfort through their lives. Fantastic. I'm thrilled, really I am. Anything that brings peace to my neighbors I'm wholly in favor of it.

Stop looking at this as something that is a failing in other people. If I go to hell because I don't follow the same path you have. Why do you care? Why does anybody care?

Yes, this is a sensitive subject for me because my whole life people, like you, have tried to make me feel inferior and somehow sub-standard because I'm not a Christian. Guess what, I don't care that you are, can you concede to the fact that I don't have to believe any specific doctrine to not be threat to society and anyone else's way of life?

Freedom of religion is a great concept, as long as you're a Christian. If you're not you see every day the pervasiveness of the Christian doctrine. You don't see it because they're on your team. I see it because I'm not and it's gotten worse over time.

Do you know why the Pledge of Allegiance isn't said in school anymore? All those unpatriotic people out there in the ACLU asking to have it removed because it's considered prayer in school? The country is going to hell and the kids can't even express a little bit of patriotism because those damn liberals won't let them? Here's a bit of history for anyone who cares. The Pledge didn't not used to contain the phrase "under God." It was "One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." Now the pledge isn't said at all. Thanks, Christians!!

Oh, and I'm not even going to get into missionary work. Pretty audacious of all the missionaries out there to go into fully functioning "heathen" societies and tell them they're doing it all wrong. I will say this, the pastor that did the service for my ex-husband's grandmother's funeral was a Lutheran. He mentioned in passing that he had worked in Hawaii. I said something on the order of "That don't suck" and he responded that it was a tough job because of all the pagans. I walked away. I'm not built to be able to combat that kind of sheer global ignorance.

And so it goes that I retire from this thread. I've said what I have to say, I've contributed what I feel I've had to contribute and frankly if I keep hanging around I'm just going to get p****d off.

Good luck to you all. If you solve the world's problems in my absence, send me a note or something.

Rachel

Can't believe I've missed seeing this thread for over a month now! This is definitely the most civil discussion dealing with this subject on any board I've ever seen. Especially considering that it's gone on for 1617 posts now. It's been fun reading them all too ... well most of them were fun to read, a few were just plain "odd" ...

I won't spend much time commenting at this point, just wanted to say that I have enjoyed catching up on this discussion.

Oh and I fall into the 6,000 year camp if anyone was wondering... why? Because I believe the Bible, I have put it to the test in my own life, and made the choice that it will be both my basis and bias in life. Some may consider me ignorant, others foolish... but I am satisfied with the integrity of the Bible as both a historical document and that it's ultimate authorship was directed by God.

Btw - Andy - thanks for all those contradictions you posted earlier - studying apparent contradictions in the Bible is one of my hobbies - and you put up a few I'd not looked into yet... I find they usually have answers that give a beautiful look to the tapestry of scripture...

I'll try to join in a bit later on all this fun, till then -

Aloha, Tim

All religions are inventions of limited human imagination. The notion that "someone" is responsible for the existence of matter is the truly primitive reaction of a primate brain. If there is a grand design, some Prime Mover or First Cause, it is far beyond the ability of the human intellect to comprehend. The belief that we humans resemble, or have a special connection with, an author of some grand cosmic design is fundamentally absurd, and clearly the product of a clever animal attempting to make sense of things far beyond its understanding. Presuming to describe the nature of this invented "creator", or, even more ridiculous, claiming to know what a cosmic creator likes and dislikes, as most religions do, is a manifestation of the dark swamp of ignorance and superstition that has long afflicted humankind.
There really is no way to understand the phenomenon of existence, of matter, of being. There is no reason to do so in any case, except to the extent that one has been conditioned and trained within the precepts of some form of an organized belief in magic.

"Know thyself, presume not God to scan

The proper study of mankind is man."

You've just lumped me and other Christians into this box you created in your own mind. Oh, no!! The mean Christians are,,,are,,talking to me
Where did I exactly say "Christians?" I mentioned fanatical organized religions since they come in all credos and flavors, but if you feel the glove fits...

Well, why should'nt we talk to people? Whose trying to be the thought police here?
How self contradictory! You should not talk to people who don't want to hear you, and if you still insist, then you are acting like the thought police!

Please let me correct a misunderstanding that some may have. I can NOT save you, nor can any other Christian save you. Only Jesus can forgive your sins and only through Him can you have everlasting life. Make sure you completely understand that no one, but no one gets to the Father except through Jesus Christ.
Sheesh! I guess the rest of the world is doomed then! Never mind that there are atheists that live a far more moral life (and far less judgemental) than many chest thumpers. I guess they have no chance! So I guess these poor misguided non-religious folks who do the right thing because is the right thing and not because they're being told to do so or they will burn in eternal flames will be punished, now does that make sense and fit in the picture of a merciful Deity as portrayed by the scriptures? :shakehead

There's some funny ideas going around about Christians that’s for sure.

I don't know about the others, but I grew up Christian, attended services faithfully, TAUGHT Christianity in my teens to what I then considered "Lost Souls", attended four years of Catechism School, my father is a Deacon, and I even contemplated religious life seriously, so I guess my "funny" views have some base.

However, I was fortunate enough to look at the bubble from outside and my eyes opened. I saw all the controlling, fear inducing tactics, and manipulation. My "funny" view is not directed to Christians only, but to all of the religions that control people with a fear of damnation. That is the reason I rennounced all forms of organized religion.

I do not need to be reminded of the existence of a higher power. I believe in one deeply, and admire the exquisite work of this higher intelligence. That is how I feel and Nobody is going change my view.

However, when I get pestered and kept getting reminded that I will be dammed if I do not repent (I still don't know what I'm supposed to repent from), my patience runs short. I do not go around your place knocking your doors and telling you that you're blind and brainwashed, because I DO NOT care what you believe in. People are entitled to live their lives they way it pleases them as long as it does not trample the peace of others. Simply put LIVE AND LET LIVE!!
