Hank49:
How does one "recognize" or "accept" Jesus?

as i read Jesus (let me say that again). as *I* read Jesus, he came at a time when his people (the Jews) were paying lip service to holiness and being godly, and living a righteous person's life ... but only lip service.

Jesus preached straight from Isaiah. what does God want of us? He wants us to feed the widows and orphans, take care of your elderly, not give false witness against other people ... in short, Jesus was preaching that to love God meant you had to ACT in a specific way towards your fellow people.

that's why he summarized his teachings into one single commandment:

Love God above all else and love your neighbor as you love yourself.

that one commandment is a single commandment. you can't do one half without the other half.

to accept Jesus (in my book) is to accept his teachings that we have to treat each other as brothers and sisters, live rightheous lives by that standard, and if you do wrong to another person, make it right.

unlike Jesus, I do not think of God as a real entity. I think of God as the ultimate metaphor for that which is good.

thus, i belive Jesus taught his disciples to love that which was good, and to love their neighbor as themselves.

and if you do that, you will inherit the Kingdom of God (that means you will have a part in doing what is good and what is righteous).

Wow! I feel a real sense of community here.

That never crossed my mind before. I think that is a very good way of being religious, by following a not-too-specific idea.

Makes it a bit difficult to figure out who/what to tithe.:D

OK, I admit up front I didn't read the entire thread, but I did read a lot of it. I have a question. If we are all descendents of Adam and Eve (or really descendents of Noah because everyone else besides his clan was killed in the flood), and if the earth is only a few thousand years old, how come people from Africa have dark skin, people from eastern Asia have narrow eyes and dark hair, people from Scandinavian countries have fairer skin and often lighter hair, etc.? Shouldn't we all look basically the same? Shouldn't we all look like Noah? Or did some groups EVOLVE for some reason to be different appearing than others? And, if they did evolve, how could this happen so quickly? I mean really, maybe three or four thousand years and we have all this physical diversity?

While we are on the subject of questions...
Did Adam and Eve's children procreate with their mother or their siblings? Same question with Noah and his family?

I refer you to the new New York Dolls song "Dance Like a Monkey" for your answer.
